King James wording
King James Version
For enquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers:THE KEY
The past becomes wisdom when you question it and search the roots of what it carries.
THE MEANING
You stand within a longer memory: the generations before you can be asked, and their ancestors’ testimony can be searched. Wisdom reaches you through investigation as well as inheritance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that insight must begin from scratch in the present. Understanding also grows from an inheritance you can examine.
THE ROOT
חֵקֶר
ḥēqer
GROWS FROM
חקר
To search out, probe, or investigate.
“search” in this verse is ḥēqer. The word frames inherited wisdom as something to probe, not merely receive as a conclusion. The same root appears when Job asks whether human searching can find God, holding the value of inquiry alongside its limits.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāqar: To investigate or search out.
חָקַר
In Proverbs 25:2, kings honor a matter by searching it out; inquiry is part of wisdom’s work.
ḥēqer: Inquiry or searching.
חֵקֶר
In Job 11:7, the same noun asks whether human searching can find God, placing a limit on what inquiry can fully contain.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom moves through memory that is actively examined: the past is consulted, and its testimony is searched.
Remember the days of the ages; sift the years of generation upon generation. Ask your father, and he will show you; your bearded ones, and they will say to you.The weight of God is to hide a matter; the weight of kings is to search out a matter. These were of nobler birth than those in Thessalonica, who received the word with all eagerness of heart, and sifted the writings daily, whether these things held so.THE THREAD
Can you find God by searching? Can you find the Almighty to his limit? Both passages use חֵקֶר (ḥēqer, inquiry or searching): here the search reaches the understanding of earlier generations; there it asks whether human inquiry can fully find God. The shared root honors searching while revealing that no search contains all that it seeks.
