King James wording
King James Version
They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:THE KEY
The force holds together through distinct paths: each advances on its own trodden way, and none breaks formation.
THE MEANING
The verse shows you a force whose terror comes from discipline: it runs, surmounts the wall, and holds formation as each one follows its own course. Its members do not need to move on one identical track for their advance to remain coordinated. This is destruction with order and momentum.
THE ROOT
דְּרָכָיו
derakhav
GROWS FROM
דרך
To tread, step, or advance; by extension, a trodden way.
English can make “ways” sound like an abstract plan, but the word carries the image of a course walked by repeated steps. Each follows a distinct course, and the formation holds through coordinated movement rather than sameness.
ALSO GROWS
dārak: To tread, step, or advance.
דָּרַךְ
The verb gives the path its physical sense: it is a course someone actually moves along.
déreḵ: A way, road, or course.
דֶּרֶךְ
This is the noun in “his ways”; the force advances along the courses each one follows.
THE PATTERN
A collective can advance together while each member keeps to its own course.
The locusts have no king, and all of them go out in ranks. For just as we have many limbs in one body, and not all the limbs have the same deed. But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed.THE THREAD
The steps of a strong one are set firm by the LORD, and he delights in his way.“His way” uses the same Hebrew word as “his ways” in Joel: a course to be trodden. Joel shows many moving along their own courses in formation; the Psalm turns that image toward one person whose way is held in order.
