This verse in the King James

King James wording
Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.

The verse places the gathered nations and the LORD’s own mighty ones in the same arena, making the gathering a question of whose force prevails.

The nations converge from every side, and the LORD’s mighty ones are called down into their midst. This is a scene of open confrontation; the verse leaves the danger plainly in view. Its live tension is the meeting of a gathered multitude and a summoned power.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the assumption that a massed force is the only power present: the LORD’s mighty ones are summoned into the same field.

וְנִקְבְּצוּ

wĕniqbeṣû

GROWS FROM

קבץ

q-b-ṣ

To gather or collect into one place.

“Gather yourselves” in this verse is wĕniqbeṣû. English can make “gather” sound like mere crowding, but this root names the collecting of many into one place. Joel’s scene draws the nations together for a charged encounter; the same root can also describe gathering outcasts home.

ALSO GROWS

qāvaṣ: To gather, collect

קָבַץ

This is the root verb behind the verse’s gathering, bringing the nations into one scene.

wĕqibbaṣtî: And I will gather

וְקִבַּצְתִּי

In Isaiah 56:8, the same root gathers outcasts and others to the LORD, showing how the purpose and object of a gathering shape its meaning.

גִּבּוֹרֶיךָ

gibbōreykha

GROWS FROM

גבר

g-b-r

To be strong, prevail, or exert might.

“mighty ones” in this verse is gibbōreykha. This root names both the mighty one and the might by which one prevails. The verse puts prevailing force into the scene as the LORD’s response to the nations gathered around it.

ALSO GROWS

gibbôr: A mighty one, warrior

גִּבּוֹר

This is the singular form behind “thy mighty ones,” giving the summoned force a concrete shape.

gĕvûrāh: Might, strength

גְּבוּרָה

This related noun names the force carried by the “mighty ones” who are called down.

A gathering of nations around the LORD’s people becomes the setting for a direct encounter with divine judgment.

I will also gather all the nations, and bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and I will judge them there for my people and for my portion, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and have parted my land.
Joel 3:2 · SDVThe nations are gathered into a valley where the LORD answers their scattering of his people and land.
And I gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle; the city is seized, the houses are stripped, and the women are ravished; half the city goes out uncovered, and what is left of the people is not cut off from the city.
Zechariah 14:2 · SDVHere the assembly becomes an assault on Jerusalem, with capture and violence stated plainly.
For they are breaths of demons, making signs, which go out to the kings of the whole inhabited world, to gather them to the war of that great day of God, the All-Ruling.
Revelation 16:14 · SDVThe kings of the earth are gathered for battle on the day of God Almighty, carrying the same convergence into a final confrontation.
The Lord GOD, who gathers the driven ones of Israel, says, Yet I will gather others to him, beside those already gathered to him.
Isaiah 56:8 · SDV

Here the same root gathers Israel’s outcasts and others to the LORD. Joel’s gathered nations face confrontation; Isaiah shows that the root can also hold a gathering that restores the scattered.
