This verse in the King James

King James wording
Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

A disciple here is a learner beside a witness, whose learning remains open to what the witness will reveal.

Learning begins in the presence of someone whose witness has earned attention. The learner’s place is real, but it stays open to what that witness points toward.

manth-

Learn; acquire knowledge through learning.

The word rendered “disciples” names learners: the two gathered around John are still in the process of learning. That root makes their identity active and open, rather than a finished religious rank.

ALSO GROWS

manthanō: learn

μανθάνω

This verb is the source of ⁨μαθητής⁩: the disciple is named by the act of learning.

mathēteuō: become or make a disciple

μαθητεύω

The related verb keeps the same movement of learning alive as a way of becoming.

mathēma: lesson, that which is learned

μάθημα

This branch names what learners receive, placing John’s gathered disciples within an ongoing process of learning.

A witness stands with learners until their attention can move beyond him.

A voice calls out in the wilderness, Clear the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a raised road for our God.
Isaiah 40:3 · SDVThe voice prepares the way for the one beyond itself, making the witness a path toward recognition.
Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same writing, and brought the good news of Jesus to him.
Acts 8:35 · SDVPhilip meets a learner where he is and directs his attention to Jesus.
And fixing his gaze on Jesus as he walked, he said, Look, the Lamb of God!
John 1:36 · SDVJohn’s witness turns the learners’ attention toward Jesus.
Lift my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and low in heart, and you will find rest for your living souls.
Matthew 11:29 · SDV

The word translated “disciples” shares its learning-root with Jesus’ “learn of me.” The shared root opens discipleship as an ongoing movement of learning, now directed toward Jesus.
