This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Here the ladder’s connecting function belongs to the Son of Man: heaven’s messengers move upon him.

The heavens are open, and God’s messengers move up and down upon the Son of Man. He is where heaven and earth meet, so divine presence reaches you through him now.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that heaven is sealed off from human life: the passage places its open threshold upon the Son of Man.

ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας

anabainontas kai katabainontas

GROWS FROM

βαίνω

bainō

to go, to step

“going up” in this verse is anabainontas kai katabainontas. Both opposite directions share the same Greek verb for going; only the direction changes. That movement is focused upon the Son of Man, the meeting point between heaven and earth.

ALSO GROWS

anabainō: to go up, ascend

ἀναβαίνω

This names the upward movement of the messengers.

katabainō: to come down, descend

καταβαίνω

The same verb base carries the downward movement back toward earth.

ἄγγελοι

angeloi

GROWS FROM

ἄγγελος

angelos

messenger, one who carries a message

“messengers of God” in this verse is angeloi. These are message-bearers moving between heaven and earth. Their movement makes the Son of Man the point where what is above reaches the human world.

ALSO GROWS

angellō: to announce, report

ἀγγέλλω

The messenger’s work is to carry and announce what has been entrusted.

angelia: message, report

ἀγγελία

This related word names what a messenger carries across the divide.

ὄψεσθε

opsesthe

GROWS FROM

ὁράω

horaō

to see, perceive

“you will see” in this verse is opsesthe. This is a form of the Greek seeing-and-perceiving verb. The open heaven is something encountered and perceived, not merely an idea held at a distance.

ALSO GROWS

horasis: sight, vision

ὅρασις

This related noun names seeing as an experience of vision.

horatos: visible, perceptible

ὁρατός

The word family also describes what can be perceived.

The meeting of heaven and earth becomes visible at a point of contact between what is above and embodied life below.

And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder standing on the earth, and its head reached to the heavens; and behold, messengers of God were climbing up and coming down on it.
Genesis 28:12 · SDVA ladder joins earth and heaven as God’s messengers move in both directions across it.
And Jesus, when he had been immersed, came up straight out of the water; and look, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the breath of God coming down like a dove and coming upon him.
Matthew 3:16 · SDVThe heavens open, and God’s breath descends upon Jesus, placing the meeting of heaven and earth in embodied life.
A fresh and living way that he opened anew for us through the hanging curtain of his flesh;
Hebrews 10:20 · SDVAccess is pictured as a living way through the veil identified with his flesh.
And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder standing on the earth, and its head reached to the heavens; and behold, messengers of God were climbing up and coming down on it.
Genesis 28:12 · SDV

Genesis shows the same messengers moving up and down between earth and heaven, traveling on a ladder. John places that connecting movement upon the Son of Man: the meeting point is a person.
