Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

A witness serves the Light by pointing beyond himself rather than becoming its source.

You can bear true testimony without becoming the source of what you reveal. The witness has a real purpose, and the Light remains distinct from the one who points to it. Attention passes through the witness toward the Light.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that a witness must become the center to matter, or that testimony is false unless the witness is the thing being testified to.

μαρτυρήσῃ

martyrēsē

GROWS FROM

μαρτυρ-

martyr-

To bear witness or testify.

“to bear witness” in this verse is martyrēsē. The Greek word family holds the act of testifying, the testimony itself, and the witness in a shared stem. Here, the witness bears testimony about the Light without claiming the Light’s identity.

ALSO GROWS

martyria: Testimony

μαρτυρία

This branch names what the witness carries: testimony about the Light.

martys: Witness

μάρτυς

This branch names the person who bears the testimony, keeping the witness distinct from what is witnessed.

φωτός

phōtos

GROWS FROM

⁨φωτ-⁩ (phōt-, the Greek stem of ⁨φῶς⁩ [phōs, light])

Light or illumination; that by which things become visible.

The same word family names light and the act or bearer of illumination. The witness directs attention toward what makes visible, while remaining distinct from that Light.

ALSO GROWS

phōtizō: To illuminate or give light

φωτίζω

This branch makes the revealing action of light explicit.

phōstēr: Luminary or light-bearing body

φωστήρ

This branch shows how something can bear light while remaining distinguishable from the light itself.

A witness bears testimony while remaining distinct from the one whose truth is being witnessed.

You are my witnesses, says the LORD, and my servant, whom I have chosen, so that you may perceive and lean your weight on me, and understand that I AM. Before me no God was shaped, and behind me there shall be none.
Isaiah 43:10 · SDVThe witnesses testify to the LORD’s identity while remaining distinct from the one they name.
But you will take hold of power when the Set-Apart Breath comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the farthest edge of the ground.
Acts 1:8 · SDVThe witnesses carry testimony outward, while its focus remains the one they witness to.
For we do not proclaim ourselves, but the Anointed One, Jesus, the Lord; and ourselves as your servants through Jesus.
2 Corinthians 4:5 · SDVThe speaker’s message points beyond the messenger and refuses to make the messenger its center.
He came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, so that all might trust through him.
John 1:7 · SDV

John 1:7 places ⁨μαρτυρία⁩ (martyria, testimony) beside ⁨μαρτυρήσῃ⁩ (martyrēsē, bear witness), words from the same Greek family. Its purpose is belief through the witness, so the distinction in verse 8 keeps the witness a clear passage to the Light he names.
