This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Martha’s “if” makes Jesus’ presence sound like a condition for life, while the next verse reveals that death cannot put life beyond his reach.

The reader can speak honestly from grief while still addressing the Lord: love feels absent where death has arrived. This sentence gives voice to the painful thought that the loss would not have happened if he had been there. The next verse opens a hope that reaches beyond the moment that was missed.

ἀπέθανεν

apethanen

GROWS FROM

θνῄσκω

thnēskō

To die; to become mortal or dead.

“died” in this verse is apethanen. Martha’s word names a real death; the root does not soften her loss. Its word-family also names death and mortality, placing this moment within the human condition, then Jesus’ next words claim that life reaches beyond it.

ALSO GROWS

thanatos: Death.

θάνατος

The related noun makes explicit the reality Martha is naming, not merely a feeling of absence.

thnētos: Mortal; subject to death.

θνητός

This branch widens the word’s reach from one death to the mortal condition the verse confronts.

Scripture lets grief speak honestly about felt absence while holding open the possibility that love still reaches the brokenhearted.

The LORD is near to those whose heart is broken, and delivers those crushed in breath.
Psalm 34:18 · SDVThe verse places the LORD near the very people who feel broken.
For I am leaning my full weight upon this, that neither death, nor life, nor messengers, nor rulers, nor powers, nor things standing here, nor things about to come. Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Jesus the Anointed One, our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39 · SDVEven death cannot sever the reader from the love named here.
Jesus said to her, I am the rising, and the life. Whoever leans their weight into me, even if they die, will live.
John 11:25 · SDV

Martha measures life by whether Jesus is present before death; he answers by naming himself as resurrection and life. His presence reaches into the loss that has already happened.
