This verse in the King James

King James wording
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

The Greek says “rise again” and “resurrection” with one root image: standing up.

You can name a hope that reaches beyond present death: the dead rise again at a day still ahead. The words give this hope a concrete shape, standing up again.

ἀνάστασις

anastasis

GROWS FROM

⁨ἵστημι⁩ (histēmi), with ⁨ἀνά⁩ (ana-, up/again)

To stand or set; with ana-, to stand up again.

“rising” in this verse is anastasis. The noun ⁨ἀνάστασις⁩ (anastasis, resurrection) and the verb ⁨ἀναστήσεται⁩ (anastēsetai, he will rise again) share the image of standing up. The verse lets that image echo twice: resurrection is the dead standing again.

ALSO GROWS

anistēmi: To rise or stand up.

ἀνίστημι

This verb is the word-family behind “he shall rise again,” giving the future hope the image of a body standing up.

anastasis: A rising, standing up; resurrection.

ἀνάστασις

This noun names the same standing-up movement as the verb beside it, joining the event and the action in one root image.

The dead are pictured as waking or rising from the grave at a final turning point, with the outcome of that awakening exposed.

Your dead will live; together with my corpse they will rise. Awake and ring out, you who camp in the dust, for your dew is a dew of lights, and the earth will drop the slackened ones.
Isaiah 26:19 · SDVThe earth that holds the dead is also pictured casting them out as they arise and live.
And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground shall awake, some to the life of the ages, and some to exposure and contempt for the ages.
Daniel 12:2 · SDVThose sleeping in the dust awake, and the verse names both everlasting life and shame as outcomes.
In an instant, in the flick of an eye, at the last trumpet; for it will sound, and the dead will be awakened undecaying, and we will be made other.
1 Corinthians 15:52 · SDVAt the last trumpet, the dead are raised incorruptible as the living are changed.
Jesus said to her, I am the rising, and the life. Whoever leans their weight into me, even if they die, will live.
John 11:25 · SDV

Martha locates resurrection at the last day; Jesus answers with the same Greek noun, anastasis, and says, “I am.” The future hope remains, while its source is named in the present.
