This verse in the King James

King James wording
For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

The word translated “miracle” also means “sign”: the event points beyond itself, and its report carries that pointer into new encounters.

A report of a sign can gather you toward an encounter: the act points beyond itself to the nature of the one who does it. Hearing carries that pointer beyond the moment of seeing, so recognition can begin in you before you witness the act firsthand.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that a sign is only spectacle, exhausted by the moment it happens.

σημεῖον

sēmeion

GROWS FROM

σῆμα

sēma

mark, sign, token

“sign” in this verse is sēmeion. The Greek word carries the sense of a marker: the act is not only extraordinary but points beyond itself. The report lets that pointer travel to people who did not see the act firsthand.

ALSO GROWS

sēmainō: to indicate or make something known

σημαίνω

A sign communicates beyond the event itself; its meaning can be heard and recognized.

sēmeioō: to mark or signal

σημειόω

This branch keeps the image of a visible marker, helping show why the act directs attention beyond itself.

A sign makes a reality perceptible and carries its meaning toward recognition.

And it shall come to pass, if they will not lean their weight on you, nor hear and respond to the voice of the first sign, that they will lean their weight on the voice of the latter sign.
Exodus 4:8 · SDVThe sign has a “voice”: its meaning is carried to hearers and can change what they recognize.
This beginning of signs Jesus made in Cana of Galilee, and he brought his weight into the light, and his disciples leaned their weight on him.
John 2:11 · SDVThe sign manifests what is present in Jesus and turns the disciples’ attention toward him.
Men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus of Nazareth, a man shown forth by God among you through works of strength and wonders and signs, which God did through him in the midst of you, as you yourselves also know.
Acts 2:22 · SDVSigns make God’s work through Jesus perceptible within the hearers’ own experience.
But these are written so that you might lean your full weight on this, that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Son of God, and that by leaning your weight you might have life in his nature.
John 20:31 · SDV

This verse gives the signs their direction: they awaken trust and open into life through Jesus’ name, as his nature made known. The crowd’s meeting is a beginning of recognition, not merely a response to spectacle.
