King James wording
King James Version
While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.THE KEY
Trusting the light is how you become its child: what you lean into becomes the source shaping your life.
THE MEANING
Light is present now, and trust means placing your weight on it, not merely agreeing that it exists. As you trust the light, you become its child: its way of seeing becomes the life taking shape in you. The verse holds hiddenness beside that light: Jesus speaks, then withdraws from sight.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
You must already belong to the light before you can trust it; this verse places trust before the identity that grows from it.
THE ROOT
πιστεύετε
pisteuete
GROWS FROM
πιστ-
pist-
Trust, reliance; placing confidence in or entrusting oneself to something.
“lean your weight on” in this verse is pisteuete. The Greek trust-family carries more than agreeing that the light exists: it points to relying on it. The verse links that trust with becoming a child of light, so belief is an entry into the light’s life, not just an opinion about it.
ALSO GROWS
pistis: Trust or reliance.
πίστις
This related noun makes clear that “believe” here belongs to a family of words about trust.
pistos: Trustworthy or reliable.
πιστός
The family also describes what can be relied upon, bringing the trust of the verse into relation with the light’s dependability.
τέκνα
tekna
GROWS FROM
τίκτ-
tikt-
The word-family of bearing or bringing forth; child, offspring.
The word for “children” carries an echo of being brought forth, not only being counted among a group. In this verse, trusting the light leads into an identity formed by the life of the light.
ALSO GROWS
tiktō: To bear or bring forth.
τίκτω
This related verb gives “children” a sense of origin and emergence.
teknon: A child or offspring.
τέκνον
This singular form shows the family sense behind the plural “children of light.”
φῶς
phōs
GROWS FROM
φωτ-
phōt-
Light that shines and makes visible.
“the light, it, light” in this verse is phōs. The verse calls light both something you can trust and the source of the identity you enter. The related words for illuminating and for a luminary show light as an active source of visibility, not only an object you see.
ALSO GROWS
phōtizō: To illuminate or bring into view.
φωτίζω
This branch reveals light as something that makes seeing possible.
phōstēr: A source or bearer of light.
φωστήρ
This branch presents light as something that shines outward, fitting the verse’s image of a life shaped by light.
THE PATTERN
Light is both the source of sight and the source of a new identity.
For with you is the spring of life; in your light we see light. But as many as took him in, he gave the right to become children of God, to those who trust in his nature. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.THE THREAD
But as many as took him in, he gave the right to become children of God, to those who trust in his nature.John 1:12 uses the same Greek trust-family, πιστ- (pist-, trust or reliance), for “believe,” and links believing with becoming God’s children. That makes “children of light” here an identity that grows from trusting the light.
