This verse in the King James

King James wording
Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,

The verse names a frightening threshold: trust can become impossible when perception has closed.

Here, belief is trust, the placing of weight, not just agreement with an idea. The verse names a condition in which trust is no longer available; the next line locates that closure in eyes that cannot see and a heart that cannot understand. This is a whole-person narrowing, not simply a lack of information.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that every failure to trust is only a shortage of evidence that more proof can fix.

πιστεύειν

pisteuein

GROWS FROM

πιστ-

Trust; lean your full weight on.

“lean their weight on” in this verse is pisteuein. The Greek word family joins believing with trust and what is firm or trustworthy. That makes the verse’s inability more than a failure to agree: trust itself cannot take hold when perception is closed.

ALSO GROWS

pistis: Trust, reliance, confidence.

πίστις

The same word family appears in Romans 10:17, where trust comes through hearing; here, closed perception leaves trust unable to take hold.

pistos: Firm, steady, trustworthy.

πιστός

This branch links trusting with what can bear weight, bringing out what is missing when trust becomes impossible.

ἠδύναντο

ēdynanto

GROWS FROM

δύναμαι

To be able; to have capacity.

“could not” in this verse is ēdynanto. The verb states inability, not merely hesitation. The verse describes trust as beyond their capacity in that moment, tying the closed perception named in the next line to a real limit on what they can receive.

ALSO GROWS

dynamis: Power, ability.

δύναμις

This branch makes the verse’s “could not” a matter of capacity.

dynatos: Able, possible; mighty.

δυνατός

Its family of ability words sharpens the contrast between what can be received and what is no longer possible for them.

Trust depends on perception: when hearing, sight, and understanding close, trust cannot take hold.

Make the heart of this people fat, make their ears heavy, and smear over their eyes, lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and discern with their heart, and turn back, and be healed.
Isaiah 6:10 · SDVThe verse links closed sight, hearing, and understanding with an inability to turn and be healed.
Yet the LORD has not given you a heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear and respond, to this day.
Deuteronomy 29:4 · SDVIt connects perception in the heart, eyes, and ears with the capacity to receive what is being shown.
So then trust comes out of hearing, and hearing comes through the word of God.
Romans 10:17 · SDVIt expresses the other side of the pattern: hearing is the way trust comes.
So then trust comes out of hearing, and hearing comes through the word of God.
Romans 10:17 · SDV

John’s “believe” and Romans’ “faith” come from the same Greek word family of trust. Romans shows trust coming through hearing; John shows what happens when perception has closed and trust can no longer take hold.
