King James wording
King James Version
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:THE KEY
Belief and public confession can come apart: trust is present, while the cost of speaking still governs the voice.
THE MEANING
This verse names a split that can exist in you now: you can trust him while staying silent because naming that trust threatens your place among others. The threat does not make the silence costless, or the trust unreal.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that outward silence always proves inward disbelief: here, many believe, yet withhold confession because belonging is at stake.
THE ROOT
ὁμολογέω
homologeō
GROWS FROM
ὁμός + λέγω (homos + legō)
Say the same; agree or acknowledge.
“confess” in this verse is homologeō. The verb can carry the picture of saying in agreement, making confession more than private recognition: it is recognition given voice. Here the rulers withhold that shared saying because they fear losing their place.
ALSO GROWS
homología: Confession or acknowledgment.
ὁμολογία
This noun names the spoken acknowledgment the rulers hold back.
homologoumenōs: By common confession; acknowledged by all.
ὁμολογουμένως
Its sense of public acknowledgment sharpens the tension between what is recognized and what can safely be said.
πιστεύω
pisteuō
GROWS FROM
πιστ-
pist-
Trust, rely on, or put confidence in.
“leaned their weight on” in this verse is pisteuō. The verse says many trust him even while they withhold public acknowledgment. Trust is present, but fear shapes whether it becomes visible in speech.
ALSO GROWS
pístis: Trust or reliance.
πίστις
This related noun makes clear that their belief is a form of reliance, not mere awareness.
pistós: Trustworthy; steady.
πιστός
The same word family links trusting with steadiness, while the verse shows the pressure that can unsettle a person’s public voice.
THE PATTERN
Fear of losing belonging can keep trust or allegiance from becoming publicly visible.
His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone would say that he was the Anointed One, he would be put out of the gathering. The trembling of man sets a snare, but the one who leans his full weight on the LORD is set on high. For before some came from James, he ate together with the nations. But when they came, he drew back and marked himself off, fearing those from the circumcision.THE THREAD
His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone would say that he was the Anointed One, he would be put out of the gathering.John 9:22 uses the same Greek verb for “confess,” ὁμολογέω (homologeō), and names removal from the synagogue as its cost. It makes the pressure explicit: recognition must become spoken agreement while belonging is threatened.
