King James wording
King James Version
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.THE KEY
The same call to trust rests first on the unseen bond Jesus names, then on the visible works that bear witness to it.
THE MEANING
You are met with a reality that cannot be seen directly: the Son is in the Father, and the Father is in the Son. Trust can rest in that word; when it is hard to perceive, the works offer something visible for trust to lean on. The verse holds inward unity and outward evidence together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that trust must be blind or unsupported: here, the works offer visible ground for receiving what cannot be seen directly.
THE ROOT
πιστεύετε
pisteuete
GROWS FROM
πιστ-
pist-
Trust, reliability, or confidence to rely upon.
“lean your weight on me” in this verse is pisteuete. The verb for “believe” is repeated: trust the word about the Father and the Son, or trust on the basis of the works. Its family carries both the act of trusting and the quality of being trustworthy, so trust here has something to lean on.
ALSO GROWS
pistis: Trust, confidence
πίστις
This noun names the reliance that the repeated verb calls for.
pistos: Trustworthy, reliable, firm
πιστός
This branch describes what can bear trust; the works function as visible witness to the claim.
THE PATTERN
Visible works can give trust a foothold in a reality the eye cannot directly see.
And Israel saw the great hand that the LORD did upon the Egyptians, and the people stood in awe of the LORD, and they leaned their weight on the LORD and on his servant Moses. But I have a greater witness than that of John, for the works which the Father has given me to finish, these same works that I do, bear witness about me, that the Father has sent me.But if I do them, even if you do not trust me, lean your weight on the works, so that you may come to perceive, and keep on perceiving, that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.THE THREAD
But these are written so that you might lean your full weight on this, that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Son of God, and that by leaning your weight you might have life in his nature.John 20:31 uses the same Greek verb, πιστεύω (pisteuō: trust), for the response the signs are meant to awaken. That trust opens into life through his name, his nature, so the works disclose who is present.
