King James wording
King James Version
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.THE KEY
Fruit is not something the branch manufactures; it is the vine’s life made visible through its continuing connection.
THE MEANING
Your life bears fruit as it remains joined to Jesus, the vine; the life in the branch is received through that connection, not produced in isolation. The verse names a limit that is true now: apart from him, you can do nothing. The fruit is the visible result of shared life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that meaningful fruit proves you are self-sufficient and can create spiritual life by effort alone; Jesus says a branch apart from him can do nothing.
THE ROOT
μένει
menei
GROWS FROM
μένω
menō
μένω (menō) means remain, stay, continue, a lasting presence.
“remains” in this verse is menei. The Greek verb behind “abideth” is μένει (menei), from μένω (menō): to remain, stay, continue. The same word family gives μονή (monē), “abode,” so the reciprocal “I in him” describes a home of shared life, not a passing visit.
ALSO GROWS
monē: Abode, dwelling.
μονή
In John 14:23 this word names the presence that makes its abode with the reader, opening “abiding” as life at home within you.
paramenō: Remain, continue, stay on.
παραμένω
This compound keeps the same μένω root; its sense of continuing makes visible the sustained connection on which the branch’s fruit depends.
THE PATTERN
Fruit appears where life remains joined to its sustaining source.
And he becomes like a tree planted by the channels of the waters, that gives its fruit in its season; its leaf does not wither; whatever he does, he breaks through. But the fruit of the breath is love, joy, wholeness, slowness to heat, kindness, goodness, trust,THE THREAD
Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves me, that one will guard my word, and my Father will love that one, and we will come to him and make a place to remain with him.“Abode” here is μονή (monē, dwelling), from the same Greek word family as μένω (menō, remain), the verb behind “abideth” in John 15:5. One verse calls this presence an abode with you; the other describes it as mutual abiding, a home from which fruit grows.
