King James wording
King James Version
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:THE KEY
The Set-Apart Breath’s reproof makes the world’s hidden missing, alignment, and judgment visible.
THE MEANING
When the Set-Apart Breath comes, it exposes the world’s missing, alignment, and judgment. The next lines tie missing to not trusting him, alignment to his going to the Father, and judgment to the ruler of this world being judged (vv. 9–11). This exposure reaches the reader now, within the world whose verdicts can seem final.
THE ROOT
ἐλέγξει
elenxei
GROWS FROM
ἐλεγ-
to expose, bring to proof, convict, or reprove
“expose” in this verse is elenxei. The same word family describes deeds exposed by the light (John 3:20) and the “evidence” of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). Here reproof carries the force of disclosure: it brings a hidden condition into evidence.
ALSO GROWS
elenchos: proof, evidence
ἔλεγχος
Its use for the evidence of unseen things shows how exposure makes what was hidden discernible.
elenchō: expose, convict, reprove
ἐλέγχω
John 3:20 uses this same verb for deeds brought into the light.
ἁμαρτίας
hamartias
GROWS FROM
ἁμαρτ-
to miss, fail, or fall short
“falling short” in this verse is hamartias. The word carries the sense of missing, not only a list of wrong acts. The next verse locates this missing in not trusting him, exposing a failure at the level of relationship and trust.
ALSO GROWS
hamartanō: to miss, err, or sin
ἁμαρτάνω
The verb form shows missing as something a person does, not merely a label attached to them.
hamartēma: a wrong act or offense
ἁμάρτημα
This branch gives the abstract missing a visible form in what a person does.
κρίσεως
kriseōs
GROWS FROM
κριν-
to decide, distinguish, or judge
Judgment names a decision about what is true and where things stand. The next verse makes this concrete: the ruler of this world stands judged.
ALSO GROWS
krinō: to decide or judge
κρίνω
The verb presents judgment as an act that establishes where things stand.
kritēs: judge, one who decides
κριτής
This branch names the one who makes a judgment, giving the word family an active agent as well as an act.
THE PATTERN
What the light exposes makes a hidden condition visible and answerable.
You set our crookedness before you, our hidden things into the light of your face. For everyone who does worthless things hates the light, and does not come to the light, so that their deeds would not be exposed. But all things being exposed are made visible by the light, for whatever is made visible is light.THE THREAD
For everyone who does worthless things hates the light, and does not come to the light, so that their deeds would not be exposed. This verse uses the same Greek verb, ἐλέγχω (elenchō), for deeds exposed by the light. John 16:8 widens that revealing work to the world’s missing, alignment, and judgment.
