This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

They do not merely know what was given; they recognize its source.

You see knowing reach beyond the gift to its origin: everything the Father has given Jesus comes from the Father. The giving is complete, and its source is clear in what Jesus carries. Here, knowing means recognizing where what is received comes from.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that what Jesus carries originates in him independently of the Father.

ἔγνωκαν

egnōkan

GROWS FROM

⁨γινώσκω⁩ (ginōskō), stem ⁨γνο-⁩/⁨γνω-⁩ (gno-/gnō-)

To know or recognize through encounter.

“known” in this verse is egnōkan. This knowing reaches beyond bare information to recognition through encounter. Here, what they recognize is the source of everything given to Jesus: the gift points back to its giver.

ALSO GROWS

gnōsis: knowledge

γνῶσις

It shares the knowing stem and shows that knowledge here is recognition of the giver’s source.

gnōstos: known, familiar

γνωστός

It carries the same knowing family into what is recognized or familiar, echoing the disciples’ recognition of where the gift comes from.

δέδωκας

dedōkas

GROWS FROM

⁨δίδωμι⁩ (didōmi), stem ⁨δω-⁩/⁨δο-⁩ (dō-/do-)

To give or grant.

“given” in this verse is dedōkas. The verb presents the giving as complete, with the gift still in view. The verse places that completed giving beside a present truth: what Jesus has received is from the Father.

ALSO GROWS

dosis: giving, gift

δόσις

This branch keeps the act of giving visible, so the verse’s focus stays on the giver as well as what is given.

doma: gift

δόμα

The shared word family links the received gift to the giving that brought it forth.

What is received bears witness to its giver as its source.

But who am I, and what is my people, that we should hold the strength to offer so willingly after this sort? For all things come from you, and from your hand have we given to you.
1 Chronicles 29:14 · SDVThe verse traces even what is offered back to its source: all things come from the LORD.
A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD's, and what fills it; the inhabited world, and those who settle in it.
Psalm 24:1 · SDVThe whole earth and everyone in it are held within the LORD’s ownership.
Every good giving and every complete gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no shifting and no shadow cast by turning.
James 1:17 · SDVEach good gift carries the Father as its source.
For I have given them the words you gave me. They have taken hold of them, and they have known in truth that I came out from you, and they have leaned their full weight on the fact that you sent me.
John 17:8 · SDV

The next verse repeats the same knowing word: recognition of the Father’s source extends from what Jesus has received to Jesus himself. The gift and the one who carries it both point back to the Father.
