King James wording
King James Version
As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.THE KEY
At the words “I am,” the ones who came to seize Jesus are the ones who move backward and fall.
THE MEANING
The group approaches Jesus, hears him identify himself, then retreats and falls to the ground. His words mark the pivot of the encounter, while the verse leaves the cause of their fall unexplained.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that the one advancing to seize someone controls the encounter: here, those who approach are the ones who retreat and fall.
THE ROOT
ἔπεσαν
epesan
GROWS FROM
πίπτω
piptō
To fall, drop, or collapse.
The Greek verb behind “fell” also appears in compounds for falling down and falling before someone. Here, the group’s bodily collapse follows Jesus’s words, making their fall part of the encounter’s action.
ALSO GROWS
katapiptō: To fall down.
καταπίπτω
This compound keeps the same fall-root and makes the downward movement explicit, like the group’s fall to the ground.
prospiptō: To fall upon or fall down before someone.
προσπίπτω
The same root can describe a fall before a person, linking bodily collapse with the posture of an encounter.
THE PATTERN
An encounter with divine presence can bring a person low before speech continues.
And Abram fell on his face, and God spoke with him, saying,Yet I heard the voice of his words, and when I heard the voice of his words, then I was in a deep sleep upon my face, and my face toward the ground. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as one dead. And he set his right hand upon me, saying, Do not be struck with awe. I am the first and the last.THE THREAD
And the unclean breaths, when they saw him, fell down before him and cried out, saying, You are the Son of God.“Fell down before him” uses a compound of the same Greek fall-root as “fell” in John 18:6. Mark pairs the fall with spoken recognition; John shows the approaching group retreating and falling after Jesus says, “I am.”
