This verse in the King James

King James wording
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Pilate sits on a judgment platform at Gabbatha, a raised place, but the one he brings forward will be lifted up in a way that overturns the scene.

Here, authority appears as a raised seat before which a person is brought. Gabbatha means “raised place,” making height part of the scene; yet a high position does not make its judgment final. The one brought forward is not exhausted by the verdict prepared for him.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The person who sits highest necessarily holds the final authority.

βῆμα

bēma

GROWS FROM

βαίνω

bainō

To step, walk, or go.

“judgment step” in this verse is bēma. Bēma names a place one steps onto, then a raised platform or tribunal. Beside it, Gabbatha (⁨גַּבַּתָּא⁩, Gabbatha) means “raised place”: height marks both the seat and its setting, making authority visible without making that position ultimate.

ALSO GROWS

basis: A step, foot, or base.

βάσις

This related word preserves the sense of footing beneath the raised judgment seat.

anabainō: To go up or ascend.

ἀναβαίνω

It shares the root of bēma and names the upward movement associated with mounting an elevated platform.

A visible seat of power never makes its occupant the source of final authority.

For God is the judge. This one he brings low, and this one he lifts.
Psalm 75:7 · SDVThe verse places the power to lower and raise above the position a person currently occupies.
Jesus answered, You would have no authority at all against me, unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you has a greater shortcoming.
John 19:11 · SDVJesus names Pilate’s authority as received from above, so the judgment seat does not create the power it displays.
Therefore God also lifted him high, and favored him with a name above every name.
Philippians 2:9 · SDVThe one brought low under human judgment is the one God highly exalts.
And I, if I am lifted up from the ground, will draw all humankind to myself.
John 12:32 · SDV

At Gabbatha, Pilate occupies a raised judgment platform; Jesus gives a different meaning to being lifted up. The one brought forward under a human verdict becomes the one whose elevation draws people to him.
