King James wording
King James Version
Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?THE KEY
The verse separates authority to teach from the capacity to recognize what is alive.
THE MEANING
A title can carry real responsibility while the central reality remains unseen. The question reaches any reader who can explain a teaching yet may not recognize what it is revealing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Knowing the language or holding the teacher’s role proves that I understand what is being revealed.
THE ROOT
γινώσκεις
ginōskeis
GROWS FROM
γινωσκ-
ginōsk-
To know, recognize, or perceive.
“do not know” in this verse is ginōskeis. The verb speaks of knowing as recognition, not simply possession of a title or facts. Jesus’ question exposes a gap between being a teacher and perceiving what is being shown.
ALSO GROWS
gnōsis: Knowledge
γνῶσις
It shares the same knowing stem, linking knowledge with the recognition this verse says is missing.
epiginōskō: Recognize, know fully
ἐπιγινώσκω
This compound carries the same knowing stem and shows how recognition can deepen beyond familiarity.
διδάσκαλος
didaskalos
GROWS FROM
διδασκ-
didask-
To teach or instruct.
“Master” here names a teacher, someone who instructs others. Set beside “knowest not,” the word reveals that transmitting instruction and perceiving its living content are not the same thing.
ALSO GROWS
didaskō: To teach or instruct
διδάσκω
The verb makes clear that the “master” is defined by the act of teaching.
didachē: Teaching or instruction
διδαχή
The teaching itself can be present while its deeper meaning remains unrecognized.
THE PATTERN
Religious knowledge and authority do not guarantee perception of what is being revealed.
How do you say, We are wise, and the instruction of the LORD is with us? Look, certainly the lying pen of the scribes has made it into falsehood. In that season Jesus answered, and said, I give thanks to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have covered these things from the wise and the discerning, and have uncovered them to the infants.Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no falling short. But now you say, We see; therefore your falling short remains.THE THREAD
All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son chooses to uncover him.“Knoweth” here is ἐπιγινώσκει (epiginōskei), built on the same Greek knowing stem as “knowest” in John 3:10. The connection opens the question further: recognition of what is being revealed is not secured by a teaching title; it comes through revelation.
