This verse in the King James

King James wording
Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

John is not refusing a name so much as revealing the order inside it: the Anointed One is the one he is sent ahead of.

This verse separates the one who bears the title from the one whose role is to arrive ahead of him. It lets you see that a role can be real without making its bearer the center of what is being revealed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

If I am not the central figure, my place has no significance.

Χριστός

Christos

GROWS FROM

χρίω

chriō

To anoint, to mark by applying oil.

Christos means “the anointed one”: this is a title rooted in anointing, not a surname. John names the distinction between the one who bears that identity and the one sent ahead of him.

ALSO GROWS

chriō: To anoint

χρίω

This is the verb from which Christos grows, showing the action contained in the title.

chrisma: Anointing

χρῖσμα

The related noun makes the title’s root visible: the Anointed One is identified by anointing.

ἀπεσταλμένος

apestalmenos

GROWS FROM

ἀποστέλλω

apostellō

To send forth or dispatch.

The Greek form presents John as one who has been sent, with that dispatch defining his place. The sentence gives the sending a direction: he is ahead of the Anointed One.

ALSO GROWS

apostolos: Messenger, envoy

ἀπόστολος

A messenger is one who has been dispatched; John’s place in the verse belongs to this family of sending.

apostolē: Sending, commission

ἀποστολή

This related noun highlights that being sent names an assigned place, not the identity of the one who is coming.

A forerunner has a distinct place: sent ahead to prepare attention for the one whose identity he does not claim.

Look, I am sending my messenger, and he will clear the way before me. And suddenly the Lord whom you seek will come to his temple, the messenger of the covenant whom you delight in. Look, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 3:1 · SDVThe messenger is sent ahead to prepare the way for the one who is coming.
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest, for you will walk ahead before the face of the LORD to make his ways ready;
Luke 1:76 · SDVJohn’s place is described as going before the Lord and preparing his way.
For we do not proclaim ourselves, but the Anointed One, Jesus, the Lord; and ourselves as your servants through Jesus.
2 Corinthians 4:5 · SDVThe messenger’s work points beyond himself to the one he serves.
A man came, sent from God, and his name was John.
John 1:6 · SDV

John 1:6 uses the same Greek sending word, ⁨ἀποστέλλω⁩ (apostellō), “to dispatch or send forth,” to describe John. John 3:28 adds where that sending places him: ahead of the Anointed One he points to.
