King James wording
King James Version
The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.THE KEY
Everything in the Son’s hand begins as something given in love.
THE MEANING
The Father’s love is visible now as complete entrustment: all things are placed into the Son’s hand. The authority he holds is received and enduring; the reader encounters divine rule through a relationship marked by love and trust.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that true authority must be seized or self-created: here, everything in the Son’s hand is entrusted by the Father’s love.
THE ROOT
δεδώκεν
dedōken
GROWS FROM
δίδωμι
didōmi
To give or grant; to place something into another’s care or possession.
The verse presents the Son’s authority as something received, not self-claimed. The perfect form δεδώκεν (dedōken, “has given”) also presents that gift as enduring: all things remain entrusted to his hand.
ALSO GROWS
dosis: giving; a gift
δόσις
This related word keeps the act of giving visible inside the idea of a gift: what rests in the Son’s hand comes to him through the Father’s giving.
doma: a gift
δόμα
This word for a gift carries the same movement from giver to receiver, illuminating the Son’s authority as entrusted rather than grasped.
THE PATTERN
The Father entrusts authority to the Son, who turns that trust toward service and life.
And Jesus came near and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to me in the heavens and upon the earth.Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came out from God and goes to God;As you have given him power over all flesh, that he may give the life of the ages to as many as you have given him.THE THREAD
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came out from God and goes to God;John 13:3 repeats the giving and hand language, then shows Jesus rise and wash his disciples’ feet. The authority placed in his hands takes the form of service.
