King James wording
King James Version
And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?THE KEY
A woman is already the direct recipient of Jesus’ self-disclosure before the disciples arrive to marvel at the conversation.
THE MEANING
The reader stands among watchers: the conversation is already underway, and they are surprised by who receives it. Their questions remain unspoken while the woman is already being addressed directly.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Direct disclosure is reserved for the recognized inner circle. Here, Jesus has already disclosed himself to a woman before the disciples arrive.
THE ROOT
ἐλάλει
elalei
GROWS FROM
λαλε- (λαλέω, laleō)
To speak or utter words.
The Greek verb translated “talked” is the same verb Jesus uses one verse earlier when he says, “I that speak unto thee am he.” The disciples find the conversation astonishing, but the woman has already received the words that reveal who is speaking.
ALSO GROWS
lalōn: One who is speaking.
λαλῶν
This is the form used in Jesus’ words to the woman in John 4:26, linking the disciples’ observation to his direct self-disclosure.
lalia: Speech, or the way someone speaks.
λαλιά
The noun preserves the same speech-family in a word for recognizable spoken expression; the exchange is central to the scene, not incidental.
THE PATTERN
The word meets women directly, making them hearers and participants rather than bystanders.
And she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You are El Roi, the God who sees me. For she said, Have I also here looked after the one who sees me?And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat beside the feet of Jesus, and heard his word.Jesus said to her, Mary. She turned, and said to him, Rabboni, Teacher.THE THREAD
Jesus said to her, I AM, the one speaking to you.“Speak” here and “talked” in verse 27 come from the same Greek verb, λαλέω (laleō), meaning to speak or utter words. The disciples arrive astonished at the exchange after the woman has already heard Jesus identify himself to her.
