This verse in the King James

King James wording
This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judæa into Galilee.

John calls the healing a sign: the change points beyond itself to the one present.

This verse lets you see the healing as part of a sequence, not an isolated event. Its visible change also carries a message about Jesus.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that a visible change is only an outcome to observe; here, it also points beyond itself.

σημεῖον

sēmeion

GROWS FROM

⁨σημ-⁩/⁨σημα-⁩ (sēm-/sēma-), from ⁨σῆμα⁩ (sēma)

A sign, mark, or indication.

The Greek word translated “miracle” also means “sign,” so the healing is not only a remarkable change; it indicates something beyond itself. The same word family links a sign with the act of signifying, keeping the event and its meaning joined.

ALSO GROWS

sēma: A sign or mark that indicates something.

σῆμα

It gives ⁨σημεῖον⁩ its sense of a visible event that points beyond itself.

sēmainō: To make something known or point something out.

σημαίνω

John uses this related verb for Jesus “signifying” what kind of death he will die; the sign and what it signifies belong to one word family.

A sign makes something beyond the visible event perceptible through that event.

And it shall come to pass, if they will not lean their weight on you, nor hear and respond to the voice of the first sign, that they will lean their weight on the voice of the latter sign.
Exodus 4:8 · SDVThe signs are described as having a voice: their visible form carries a message that can be heard and believed.
This beginning of signs Jesus made in Cana of Galilee, and he brought his weight into the light, and his disciples leaned their weight on him.
John 2:11 · SDVThe first sign manifests Jesus’ glory, and the disciples’ trust follows what it reveals.
And truly Jesus did many other signs before the eyes of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you might lean your full weight on this, that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Son of God, and that by leaning your weight you might have life in his nature.
John 20:30-31 · SDVThe signs are written to lead the reader toward recognizing who Jesus is and receiving life through his name.
He said this, showing what death he was about to die.
John 12:33 · SDV

John uses the related verb ⁨σημαίνω⁩ (sēmainō), “signifying,” to name what Jesus’ words point toward. The sign in this verse belongs to that same family of pointing: an event carries meaning beyond what is immediately seen.
