This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

To be recognized is not to be welcomed: they identify Jesus clearly while naming the search for his death.

You can be seen clearly and still be unsafe in the hands of those who want you gone. The sentence holds recognition and threat together: they know who he is, and they know what is being sought against him.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that being accurately recognized guarantees welcome or protection; a person can be named clearly while others pursue his death.

ζητοῦσιν

zētousin

GROWS FROM

ζητ-

zēt-

To seek, look for, or desire.

English “seek” can sound like neutral looking, but this Greek word carries pursuit or desire, and its object here is killing. The search does not merely locate Jesus; its purpose exposes the aim of those directing it.

ALSO GROWS

epizēteō: Seek earnestly; desire.

ἐπιζητέω

This branch makes the desire within seeking explicit; here, that desire is fixed on a person’s death.

ekzēteō: Seek out diligently.

ἐκζητέω

The same word family can describe diligent seeking after God, showing how the aim of a search determines whether it pursues harm or good.

Seeking reveals its character in its aim: it can hunt down a life or go after the lost to restore them.

When they had withdrawn, look, a messenger of the LORD appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Rise, take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word, for Herod will seek the young child to make him perish.
Matthew 2:13 · SDVHerod’s search is aimed at destroying a child, as the search in John 7:25 is aimed at Jesus’ death.
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to deliver that which had lost its way.
Luke 19:10 · SDVHere, seeking goes after the lost to deliver them, revealing a restorative aim.
But apart from trust it is impossible to please him, for the one who draws near to God must trust that he is, and that he pays wages to those who seek him out.
Hebrews 11:6 · SDVDiligent seeking can be directed toward God and met with reward, rather than directed toward another’s destruction.
Did not Moses give you the instruction? Yet none of you does the instruction. Why do you seek to kill me?
John 7:19 · SDV

John 7:19 gives the same phrase from Jesus’ own mouth: “Why go ye about to kill me?” This verse puts that aim into the question of people who recognize him, making the search for his death something they can name aloud.
