King James wording
King James Version
Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.THE KEY
Jesus’ departure is still part of his being sent: the one who leaves their sight moves toward the very source that placed him among them.
THE MEANING
Jesus names a real limit to his visible nearness: he is with them only a little while. His going is toward the one who sent him, so his departure remains within a relationship and a purpose.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
When visible nearness ends, the relationship and its purpose have ended too.
THE ROOT
πέμψαντά
pempsanta
GROWS FROM
πέμπω
pempō
To send or dispatch; to cause someone to go.
The verb names both Jesus’ origin and the direction of his departure: he is going to the one who sent him. The same verb appears when Jesus later sends his disciples, carrying the sending forward beyond his visible presence.
ALSO GROWS
pempsanta: the one who sent
πέμψαντα
This is the form in John 7:33; it ties Jesus’ going to the sender who placed him among them.
pempō: I send
πέμπω
Jesus uses this same verb in John 20:21 when he says, “even so send I you,” extending the sending beyond his own departure.
THE PATTERN
A departure can remain within a sending purpose: the sent one leaves, while the purpose continues through those affected by the sending.
And God sent me before you to set for you a remnant in the land, and to keep you alive by a great escape. But now I go away to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, Where are you going? Then Jesus said to them again, Wholeness be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.THE THREAD
Then Jesus said to them again, Wholeness be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.The Greek verb πέμπω (pempō), meaning “send,” appears in both verses. John 7:33 points Jesus toward the one who sent him; John 20:21 carries that same sending onward through his disciples.
