This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

The Greek word for the “dispersed” shares its root with “sow”: distance carries an image of seed spread among peoples.

The question turns absence into a map: if he cannot be found here, perhaps he has gone to teach the dispersed among the Greeks. Yet the word for “dispersed” belongs to the same word family as sowing. The question holds open the possibility that teaching travels wherever people have spread.

διασπορά

GROWS FROM

σπείρω

speirō

to sow; to scatter seed

“the scattered” in this verse is diaspora. The noun ⁨διασπορά⁩ is formed from dia- and the sowing word ⁨σπείρω⁩. English shows people scattered far away, while Greek also carries the image of seed spread among them.

ALSO GROWS

speirō: to sow or scatter seed

σπείρω

This verb exposes the sowing image within the word for the dispersed.

spora: sowing; seed

σπορά

This related form makes visible the seed-bearing side of scattering.

A dispersed people can become the path by which a word reaches beyond its point of origin.

I will sow them among the peoples, and from afar they will remember me, and they will live with their children and turn back.
Zechariah 10:9 · SDVThe verse describes people spread among other peoples as seed sown in far countries, where remembrance takes root.
So those who were scattered passed through every place, bringing the good news of the word.
Acts 8:4 · SDVThose scattered across different places carry the word with them, making dispersal a route for its spread.
So those who were scattered passed through every place, bringing the good news of the word.
Acts 8:4 · SDV

John’s ⁨διασπορά⁩ (diaspora, “dispersion”) belongs to the same sowing word family as ⁨σπείρω⁩ (speirō, “to sow”); Acts uses a form of that family for “scattered abroad.” What is only a question in John becomes an explicit movement in Acts: the scattered carry the word outward.
