King James wording
King James Version
The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.THE KEY
The men sent to arrest him answer as judges, and their judgment is that his voice has no equal.
THE MEANING
A voice can exceed the role assigned to it: the officers sent to seize Jesus become witnesses to his speech. Their answer shows hearing as an encounter that changes what they can honestly say; they speak about the one they were sent to arrest.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that a person’s assigned role determines what they can recognize or say.
THE ROOT
ἀπεκρίθησαν
apekrithēsan
GROWS FROM
κρίνω (krinō), κρι- (kri-)
to distinguish, decide, or judge
The Greek verb for “answered” belongs to the word family of deciding and judging. Their reply is more than a response: it is a judgment formed by hearing, that no other human voice compares.
ALSO GROWS
krisis: A judgment or decision
κρίσις
This branch makes the weight of their reply visible: they assess the speech they have heard and find it unmatched.
kritēs: A judge, one who decides
κριτής
The officers briefly take the role of evaluators; their answer gives a verdict on the speaker’s authority.
THE PATTERN
A voice reveals its authority in what it brings forth from those who hear it.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. For he says, and it comes to be; he commands, and it stands. And they were struck by his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.THE THREAD
For I have not spoken from myself, but the Father who sent me has given me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. The word translated “speak” shares the Greek λαλέω (laleō, to speak) family with the speech in John 7:46. Here Jesus names the source of his words; the officers’ response shows how distinctly that speech is heard.
