This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.

Seeking Jesus and being able to go where he goes are not the same; the verse says a person can die still within their failures.

Here, seeking Jesus and being able to go where he goes remain distinct. The warning names the possibility of dying still within one’s failures; searching alone does not erase that condition.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that seeking Jesus, by itself, guarantees access to where he goes.

ἁμαρτίαις

hamartiais

GROWS FROM

ἁμαρτ-

hamart-

to fail, err, or do wrong

“falling short” in this verse is hamartiais. The Greek word behind “sins” carries the sense of failure or going wrong, alongside its familiar sense of wrongdoing. The phrase “die in your sins” pictures death within that condition, while the verse sets seeking Jesus beside it without equating seeking with release from it.

ALSO GROWS

hamartanō: to err, do wrong, or sin

ἁμαρτάνω

This verb shares the root and makes the connection between the failures named here and the acts of going wrong.

hamartēma: a wrong act or offense

ἁμάρτημα

This related noun shows the same root describing particular acts as well as the broader condition named in the verse.

Scripture separates seeking from arrival and repeatedly names death as sin’s outcome.

You will seek me and not find me, and where I am you cannot come.
John 7:34 · SDVIt makes the gap between seeking and arriving explicit, echoing the distinction in John 8:21.
Then craving, when it has conceived, gives birth to falling short; and falling short, when it is full-grown, bears death.
James 1:15 · SDVIt traces a path from sin to death, giving the warning in John 8:21 a clear parallel.
Behold, every living soul is mine; as the father's, so also the son's is mine. The living soul that is missing shall die.
Ezekiel 18:4 · SDVIt states directly the connection between sin and death that John 8:21 also names.
For the pay of falling short is death, but the gift of God is the life of the ages in Jesus, the Anointed One, our Lord.
Romans 6:23 · SDV

Romans uses the same Greek noun as John 8:21: ⁨ἁμαρτία⁩ (hamartia), meaning sin or failure. It names death as sin’s outcome and places the gift of life alongside it.
