This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

Seeing becomes recognition when the person already before you identifies himself as the very one speaking to you.

The one you have seen is the one speaking to you now. Sight and speech converge in one encounter: the speaker is the person before you.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that seeing leaves you with only an image and no way to know who is present: the speaker identifies himself as the one you have seen.

ἑώρακας

heōrakas

GROWS FROM

ὁρα

⁨ὁρα⁩ (hora): see, perceive; the stem of ⁨ὁράω⁩ (horaō).

“perceived” in this verse is heōrakas. ⁨ἑώρακας⁩ is perfect: the seeing has happened, and its result stands in the present. Jesus joins that established sight to the speaker addressing the man now, so seeing becomes recognition.

ALSO GROWS

hórasis: sight, vision

ὅρασις

It grows from the same ⁨ὁρα⁩ stem and names the act or faculty of seeing.

horatós: visible, able to be seen

ὁρατός

It shares the ⁨ὁρα⁩ stem and describes what is available to sight.

λαλῶν

lalōn

GROWS FROM

λαλ

⁨λαλ⁩ (lal): utter, speak.

“talketh” in this verse is lalōn. ⁨λαλῶν⁩ names the person through an ongoing act: he is “the one speaking with you.” His identity is disclosed in direct address, not as information detached from his presence.

ALSO GROWS

laliá: speech, utterance, way of speaking

λαλιά

Its ⁨λαλ⁩ consonants belong to the same speaking family and make speech itself visible as a mark of the speaker.

laleō: to speak, talk

λαλέω

This verb shares the ⁨λαλ⁩ family and names the act that identifies the one standing before the man.

יֵשׁוּעַ

Yēšūaʿ

GROWS FROM

ישע

⁨ישע⁩ (y-š-ʿ): deliver, bring out from constriction.

Jesus’ name reflects Hebrew Yeshua, from yasha: deliverance, being brought out. Here that name belongs to the one who makes himself known directly, the deliverance is present and speaking.

ALSO GROWS

yāšaʿ: to deliver, bring out

יָשַׁע

This verb shares the root ⁨ישע⁩ and gives the name its action: deliverance that brings someone out.

yeshuʿah: deliverance

יְשׁוּעָה

This noun shares the same root and names what the Yeshua name carries.

Identity becomes recognizable in direct encounter, where seeing and hearing meet the person who addresses you.

And she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You are El Roi, the God who sees me. For she said, Have I also here looked after the one who sees me?
Genesis 16:13 · SDVHagar names the one who speaks to her through the recognition that she is seen.
Jesus said to him, Have I been with you for so long a time, and you have not known me, Philip? The one who has perceived me has perceived the Father. How can you say, Point us to the Father?
John 14:9 · SDVSeeing Jesus becomes recognition of the Father whose presence he makes known.
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have perceived with our eyes, which we have gazed upon, and our hands have touched, concerning the word of life.
1 John 1:1 · SDVThe Word of life is encountered through hearing, sight, and touch rather than distant inference.
Jesus said to him, Have I been with you for so long a time, and you have not known me, Philip? The one who has perceived me has perceived the Father. How can you say, Point us to the Father?
John 14:9 · SDV

“Seen” in both verses comes from the Greek ⁨ὁράω⁩ (horaō), see or perceive. John 9:37 makes the recognition face-to-face: the one the man has seen is now the one speaking to him.
