King James wording
King James Version
According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.THE KEY
The people’s promise to hear Joshua is joined to a prayer that the LORD’s presence with Moses will also be with him.
THE MEANING
You hear allegiance take the form of responsive listening: the people promise Joshua the response they gave Moses. They hold that pledge beside a prayer that the LORD be with Joshua as with Moses. The verse keeps human response and divine presence together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse dissolves the belief that a new leader’s title alone secures trust; the pledge to hear Joshua stands beside the request for the LORD’s presence with him.
THE ROOT
שָׁמַעְנוּ
shamaʿnu
GROWS FROM
שמע
sh-m-ʿ
Hear, listen, heed, and respond.
“heard and responded” in this verse is shamaʿnu. The Hebrew root שמע (shamaʿ, hear and respond) holds hearing together with the answer made to what is heard. The people promise a continuing responsive posture toward Joshua, rather than hearing his words as mere sound.
ALSO GROWS
shemuʿāh: A report or tidings; what is heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
The root names both listening and the message received, linking the people’s hearing to their reception of Joshua’s words.
mishmaʿat: Obedience or command.
מִשְׁמַעַת
This branch carries hearing into responsive action, echoing the people’s pledge to hearken.
מֹשֶׁה
Mosheh
GROWS FROM
משה
m-sh-h
Draw out; the naming scene links Moses to being drawn from the water.
Moses’ name carries the scene of being drawn out from water. The people invoke him as the measure for Joshua’s leadership, so the remembered leader bears a name rooted in being brought out.
ALSO GROWS
māšāh: To draw out.
מָשָׁה
The naming scene in Exodus 2:10 uses this verb for Moses being drawn from the water.
məšîtihû: I drew him out.
מְשִׁיתִהוּ
This form from the same root appears in the naming explanation and ties Moses’ name to the act of drawing him out.
THE PATTERN
Divine presence accompanies a calling across changes in leadership and generations.
And he said, Surely I will be with you, and this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain. No man shall stand before your face all the days of your life. As I have been with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not release you, nor leave you behind.Teaching them to guard all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you all the days, until the completion of the age. Amen.THE THREAD
Draw near, and hear all that the LORD our God will say, and speak to us all that the LORD our God will speak to you. We will hear and respond, and we will do it.Here and in Joshua 1:17, שמע (shamaʿ, hear and respond) names the people’s promised posture. Deuteronomy makes its force visible: they receive what is spoken and do it, so their pledge to Joshua carries that responsive hearing forward.
