King James wording
King James Version
The king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty and one.THE KEY
The king of Tirzah is counted as one, then the same Hebrew root gathers him into “all the kings”, a single ruler becomes part of the whole tally.
THE MEANING
One ruler can fill the whole frame when you face him; this verse places him within the full count, one among thirty-one. The view widens from the solitary king to the whole field of rule.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that the power in front of you is the whole field dissolves when it is counted as one among many.
THE ROOT
מֶלֶךְ
melekh
GROWS FROM
מלך
m-l-k
to rule, reign
“King” and “kings” carry the same three-letter seed; the plural changes the number, not the kind of power being named. The verse repeats that seed as it moves from one ruler to the full count, gathering separate centers of rule into one field.
ALSO GROWS
mālak: to reign, rule
מָלַךְ
The verb names the act carried by the king in this verse: ruling is the root beneath the title.
mamlākhāh: kingdom, realm
מַמְלָכָה
The same root extends from the ruler to the realm under rule, linking a king with the wider field his power occupies.
THE PATTERN
Scripture makes the scope of rule visible by placing kings within a wider field of power.
And the LORD said to Samuel, Hear and respond to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not spurned you, but they have spurned me, that I should not reign over them. The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers sit down together against the LORD and against his anointed one, saying,And I see the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to wage war against the one who sits on the horse, and against his army.THE THREAD
And the LORD said to Samuel, Hear and respond to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not spurned you, but they have spurned me, that I should not reign over them.Joshua’s list names one king among thirty-one; Samuel uses the same מלך root for “reign.” The shared seed opens a question beneath the tally: many rulers can be counted, but their presence alone does not settle what governs the people.
