This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto?

The “portion” is literally a cord measuring territory, so the plea turns on whether a boundary can contain a people who call themselves great and blessed.

You can recognize blessing and still feel the pressure of a boundary that seems too small. Here, the speakers use their greatness and the LORD’s blessing to name the mismatch between the people they are and the space they have received.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that naming an unmet need means denying the blessing: the speakers invoke the LORD’s blessing while arguing that their allotted space is too small.

חֶבֶל

chevel

GROWS FROM

חבל

ḥāḇal

To bind or twist; a cord or rope, and a measuring line or tract measured by it.

“measuring cord” in this verse is chevel. The word translated “portion” also means a cord or measuring line and, by extension, the territory it marks out. The complaint is about the measure of their inheritance: the line encloses a space that feels too small for the people inside it.

ALSO GROWS

chevel: Cord, rope.

חֶבֶל

The concrete cord is the image behind the land measure: the allotted share has an edge you can trace.

ḥăḇālîm: Cords or measuring lines; in Psalm 16:6, the lines that fall in pleasant places.

חֲבָלִים

The same word makes inheritance spatial: a line marks out the place someone receives.

Scripture makes belonging spatial: inheritance and habitation are described by boundaries measured against the people who occupy them.

To the many you shall multiply the inheritance, and to the few you shall make it small. Each one's inheritance shall be given according to those that were numbered of him.
Numbers 26:54 · SDVThe size of an inheritance is measured in relation to the number of people who receive it.
The cords fall to me in sweet places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful.
Psalm 16:6 · SDVThe inheritance is pictured through the lines that mark its space.
And he made from one blood every nation of humankind to settle upon all the face of the earth, marking out their fitted seasons and setting the boundary stones of their dwelling.
Acts 17:26 · SDVEven the place of habitation is expressed through bounds.
The cords fall to me in sweet places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful.
Psalm 16:6 · SDV

The “portion” in Joshua and the “lines” in this psalm use the same Hebrew word for cord or measuring line. That shared word lets you hear inheritance as a boundary traced around a place to dwell.
