King James wording
King James Version
Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.THE KEY
The inheritance becomes visible through people sent to walk it and bring its shape back.
THE MEANING
This verse meets you where a promised share still looks like uncharted ground. Its shape becomes clear as people go through it, describe it in relation to the inheritance, and return with what they have seen. Receiving the promise includes making its boundaries visible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that what is promised should arrive already clear and fully apportioned; here, the inheritance is surveyed and described before its portions are settled.
THE ROOT
וְאֶשְׁלָחֵם
ve’eshlaḥem
GROWS FROM
שׁלח
send forth, release, let go
“send” in this verse is ve’eshlaḥem. The work begins with people being sent out; only then can the land be walked and described. The root keeps sending connected with release: the surveyors are entrusted to go beyond the center and return with what they discover.
ALSO GROWS
shaliach: messenger, emissary
שָׁלִיחַ
A messenger is one sent forth; the surveyors carry an assignment into the land.
Shiloach: sent forth; the name of a water channel
שִׁלֹחַ
The name preserves the sense of what is sent out, echoing the movement from the people to the land and back.
וְהִתְהַלְּכוּ
vehithallekhu
GROWS FROM
הלך
walk, go
“go through” in this verse is vehithallekhu. The Hebrew verb is built on walking: the land is known by moving through it, not by treating it as an abstract promise. The route itself makes the inheritance legible.
ALSO GROWS
holekh: one who walks or goes
הוֹלֵךְ
It shows the same root describing a person in motion through a place.
halikhah: walking, going, a journey
הֲלִיכָה
The inheritance is surveyed through an actual journey across the land.
נַחֲלָתָם
naḥalātām
GROWS FROM
נחל
inherit, receive a possession or share
The word for inheritance grows from a root that also means to inherit or take possession. The survey connects the land’s visible shape with the share each tribe is to receive.
ALSO GROWS
nāḥal: inherit, take possession
נָחַל
The verbal form names the receiving that the survey prepares to make specific.
naḥalah: inheritance, allotted share
נַחֲלָה
This noun names the portion the men describe in relation to the land.
THE PATTERN
A purpose becomes concrete when people are sent into the place where it must unfold.
And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men out of Shittim to spy in silence, saying, Go and see the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lay down there. Now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. After these things the Lord showed forth seventy others also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself was about to come.THE THREAD
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here I am; send me.Both verses use שׁלח (shalach, send forth): Isaiah’s question joins being sent with going, and Joshua’s instruction sends people to walk the land. The shared root makes the movement itself part of how the task becomes visible.
