King James wording
King James Version
Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token:THE KEY
The kindness Rahab asks for is the same faithful love she has already shown, now asked to become shelter for her whole house.
THE MEANING
Care becomes more than a passing gesture when it is named and answered with a pledge. Faithful love can reach beyond the person who first receives it, extending through a promise meant to protect a whole household.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Kindness does not have to end with the person who first receives it; it can become a bond that extends protection to those connected to them.
THE ROOT
חֶסֶד
ḥesed
GROWS FROM
ח־ס־ד
ḥ-s-d
Faithful, committed love; kindness expressed as loyalty.
“faithful love” in this verse is ḥesed. The word translated “kindness” names more than a passing pleasant act: Rahab uses the same word for the care she has shown the spies and the care she asks them to show her father’s house. The root carries love from one encounter into a pledge that shelters a household.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāsad: To show kindness or act loyally.
חָסַד
The verb makes clear that chesed is enacted care, the kind Rahab says she has already shown.
ḥāsîd: A faithful or loyal one.
חָסִיד
This branch describes a person through the same quality of faithful love that Rahab asks the spies to return.
אֱמֶת
ʾemet
GROWS FROM
א־מ־ן
ʾ-m-n
Firmness, reliability, and what can be trusted.
“truth” in this verse is ʾemet. A “true token” is a sign that stands firm as trustworthy. Paired with chesed, the word joins loyal love to reliability: Rahab asks for care that can be counted on.
ALSO GROWS
ʾemunah: Firmness, steadiness, trust.
אֱמוּנָה
This branch shows the dependable quality implied by the true sign Rahab requests.
ʾāmēn: A firm affirmation; “so be it.”
אָמֵן
The same root gives an affirmation that establishes a word as reliable, echoing the pledge Rahab seeks.
THE PATTERN
Faithful love becomes concrete in dependable care that welcomes and protects others.
And now, if you will do faithful love and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. And the LORD passed by before his face, and called out, The LORD, The LORD God, compassionate and full of favor, slow to flare, abounding in faithful love and truth,Welcome strangers among one another, without muttering.THE THREAD
And the men said to her, Our living soul in place of yours, if you do not speak this word of ours. And it shall be, when the LORD gives us the land, that we will do with you faithful love and truth. The spies answer Rahab by promising to “deal kindly and truly”, the same faithful love and reliability she names here. Her request for a true token becomes a pledge whose words bind their care to hers.
