King James wording
King James Version
And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.THE KEY
The way forward passes through a hidden interval until the pursuit turns back.
THE MEANING
The verse gives danger a sequence: move out of the pursuers’ reach, stay concealed while their pursuit turns back, then resume your own way. The hidden interval is part of forward movement; it does not erase the path ahead.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a pause means the journey has failed: here, concealment preserves the way until movement can resume.
THE ROOT
הָרֹדְפִים
ha-rodefim
GROWS FROM
ר־ד־ף
r-d-f
To pursue, chase, press after.
“pursuers” in this verse is ha-rodefim. The root names both the act of pursuing and the condition of being pursued. The verse’s three days mark an interval in which that pressure can turn back, allowing the pursued to continue.
ALSO GROWS
radaf: To pursue or chase.
רָדַף
This is the action pressing on the men as they hide.
nirdaf: One who is pursued.
נִרְדָּף
The same root can name the other side of the chase: the men are defined by pursuit for this interval, but not forever.
וְנַחְבֵּאתֶם
we-naḥbeʾtem
GROWS FROM
ח־ב־א
ḥ-b-ʾ
To hide, conceal oneself.
“hide yourselves” in this verse is we-naḥbeʾtem. The same root forms both the act of hiding and a hiding place. Here the mountain becomes a pocket of concealed time that protects the men’s next movement.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāḇāʾ: To hide or conceal oneself.
חָבָא
The verb describes the men’s chosen condition while the pursuit passes.
maḥbēʾ: A hiding place or shelter.
מַחְבֵּא
The mountain serves as a place where exposure to the pursuers stops.
לְדַרְכְּכֶם
ledarkekhem
GROWS FROM
ד־ר־ך
d-r-k
To tread or step.
“your way” in this verse is ledarkekhem. The Hebrew word for a way or road grows from the root meaning to tread. Their path remains something to walk; hiding delays that movement without ending it.
ALSO GROWS
dāraḵ: To tread or step.
דָּרַךְ
The root makes a way a route taken by actual steps.
dereḵ: A way, road, or path.
דֶּרֶךְ
This is the road they can resume once the pursuers have turned back.
THE PATTERN
When danger closes in, concealment or shelter can preserve a path through the threat.
And David settled in the wilderness, in strongholds, and sat on a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.To the chief Musician, Al-taschith, Michtam of David, when he fled from Saul in the cave. Bend toward me, O God, bend toward me, for in you my living soul takes shelter. In the shadow of your wings I take shelter until the ruin passes over. Then they lifted stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the middle of them, and so passed by.THE THREAD
And they went, and came to the mountain, and settled there three days, until the pursuers turned back. And the pursuers sought them throughout all the road, but did not find them. The Hebrew repeats רדף (radaf, pursue) for the pursuers, carrying the same pressure from the instruction into its outcome. The three-day concealment ends as the pursuers return, and they fail to find the men; the hidden interval has preserved their way forward.
