King James wording
King James Version
And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:THE KEY
The Hebrew verb for “hid” can also mean to store away, so her concealment becomes an act of keeping the men beyond immediate reach.
THE MEANING
When danger presses close, protection can take the form of concealment and a spoken cover story. The woman hides the two men and tells their pursuers she does not know where they came from; the verse holds both her protection and her deception in the same frame.
THE ROOT
צָפַן
tsaphan
GROWS FROM
צ־פ־ן
To hide, conceal, or store away.
English “hid” can sound like simple disappearance, while צפן also carries the sense of storing something out of sight. Her concealment holds the men beyond immediate reach, preserving what is hidden rather than making it vanish.
ALSO GROWS
tsafun: Hidden or stored away.
צָפוּן
This form keeps concealment and safekeeping close together, illuminating how the men are held out of the pursuers’ sight.
tsefunim: Hidden things or treasures, as in Deuteronomy 33:19.
צְפוּנִים
The root can describe what is hidden as something of value kept in reserve, adding a note of preservation to the act of hiding.
THE PATTERN
What is held out of sight can be preserved through danger and kept for what comes next.
And the woman conceived and bore him a son, and she saw that he was good, and she hid him three months. You hide them in the hiding place of your face, from the plots of man; you store them in a booth, from the striving of tongues. For you have died, and your life is hidden with the Anointed One in God.THE THREAD
And the woman conceived and bore him a son, and she saw that he was good, and she hid him three months. The same root, צפן (tsaphan, “hide or store away”), appears in both verses. It links two women’s concealment of vulnerable lives under threat, showing hiddenness as a way of preserving what danger would reach.
