This verse in the King James

King James wording
Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:

The altar’s Hebrew name carries sacrifice in its root, yet this altar is built to witness belonging without receiving an offering.

A sign of belonging does not have to be the act that secures belonging. Here the altar stands as testimony between people, while burnt offerings and sacrifices are explicitly excluded from its purpose.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the assumption that every altar must function as a place for sacrifice: a sacred marker can testify to belonging without receiving an offering.

מִזְבֵּחַ

mizbēaḥ

GROWS FROM

זבח

to slaughter or sacrifice

“sacrifices” in this verse is mizbēaḥ. The Hebrew word ⁨מִזְבֵּחַ⁩ (mizbēaḥ, altar) is formed from ⁨זבח⁩ (z-b-ḥ), the root of slaughtering and sacrifice. The verse holds a sharp distinction: the altar carries sacrifice in its name, yet here its purpose is to stand as a witness, not to receive an offering.

ALSO GROWS

zāvaḥ: to slaughter or sacrifice

זָבַח

This verb exposes the sacrificial root inside the word for altar, making the verse’s stated exclusion especially striking.

zevaḥ: a sacrifice or sacrificial offering

זֶבַח

This noun names the very practice the altar is explicitly not built to perform.

Witness answers a threatened question of belonging by making the relationship visible.

And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and you this day. Therefore its name was called Galeed, the heap of witness.
Genesis 31:48 · SDVThe heap serves as a visible witness between people, marking their relationship without being the relationship itself.
But it may be a witness between us and you, and our generations after us, that we may serve the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our wholeness offerings; and that your children may not say to our children in the days to come, You have no portion in the LORD.
Joshua 22:27 · SDVThe altar stands as testimony across generations against the claim that one group has no part in the LORD.
The breath itself testifies together with our breath, that we are children of God.
Romans 8:16 · SDVWitness makes belonging known by testifying to the relationship of children to God.
Therefore we said, It shall be, when they say so to us, or to our generations in the days to come, that we may say again, Behold the shape of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.
Joshua 22:28 · SDV

The next verse makes the altar’s purpose explicit: its pattern is a witness between the groups and their generations. The same Hebrew word for altar carries the root of sacrifice, while the verse names testimony as its function.
