What Does Joshua 22:29 Mean?

Far be it from us that we should break away from the LORD, and turn this day from walking after the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for gifts, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his dwelling.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.

A rival altar for sacrifice would be rebellion because it turns the people from following the LORD.

The verse speaks now as a distinction between an act’s sacred appearance and its direction: a sacrificial altar beside the LORD’s altar would declare a turn away from following him. Devotion is measured by whom it follows, not by religious structure alone.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a second place of sacrifice remains faithful simply because its purpose is sacred.

לָשׁוּב

lāshûv

GROWS FROM

שׁוּב

shuv

Turn, return, come back

“turn” in this verse is lāshûv. Here, turning is more than a change of mind: it changes whom the people follow. The same root can name return and restoration, so its direction, away from the LORD or back toward him, shapes its meaning.

ALSO GROWS

teshuvah: Return, turning back

תְּשׁוּבָה

This word for return shares the same root, showing that shuv can describe movement back toward the LORD as well as turning away.

hēshîv: Bring back, restore

הֵשִׁיב

This form shows the root can name being brought back; the verse makes direction, rather than movement itself, the decisive question.

מִזְבֵּחַ

mizbēaḥ

GROWS FROM

זבח

z-b-ḥ

Slaughter, sacrifice

The word for altar carries the root of slaughtering and sacrifice. The threatened second structure would therefore be another sacrificial center, not merely an extra marker beside the LORD’s altar.

ALSO GROWS

zāvaḥ: Slaughter, sacrifice

זָבַח

The verb names the sacrificial act associated with the altar, making clear what kind of center the speakers reject.

zevaḥ: Sacrifice, sacrificial meal

זֶבַח

This noun shares the altar’s root and links the structure directly to the offerings it would host.

Worship’s form and direction disclose whom a person follows.

But in the place which the LORD shall choose in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your rising offerings, and there you shall do all that I command you.
Deuteronomy 12:14 · SDVThe verse makes the place of offering part of the people’s fidelity to the LORD.
And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long will you limp on two branches? If the LORD is God, walk after him, but if Baal, then walk after him. And the people answered him not a word.
1 Kings 18:21 · SDVThe verse makes choosing whom to follow inseparable from divided worship.
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true ones who bow down bow before the Father in breath and in truth, for the Father seeks such as these to bow before him.
John 4:23 · SDVThe verse locates true worship in devotion to the Father expressed in spirit and truth.
And you shall turn back to the LORD your God, and you shall hear and respond to his voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your living soul.
Deuteronomy 30:2 · SDV

Both verses turn on ⁨שׁוּב⁩ (shuv), meaning “turn” or “return.” Joshua names turning away from following the LORD as rebellion; Deuteronomy uses the same root for returning toward him, revealing how the direction of the turn changes everything.
