This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

The root ⁨שׁוּב⁩ (shuv, return) names both the delegation’s return and the word they bring back, making understanding itself a return journey.

What goes out to meet distance can return with an answer the whole people can hear. The verse makes communication part of restoration: the delegation returns, and the report returns through them. Separation does not have to be the last movement; understanding can still return into shared life.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a boundary makes mutual understanding impossible: the distance is crossed, and an answer returns to the people who need it.

וַיָּשֻׁבוּ

vayyashuvu

GROWS FROM

שׁוּב

shuv

To turn back or return; in a causative form, to bring back or restore.

“turned back” in this verse is vayyashuvu. The first form says the delegation returns; the second, from the same root, says they return a word to Israel. The Hebrew makes the message part of the return, so the journey closes when what was learned comes back into shared hearing.

ALSO GROWS

shav: Returned or turned back.

שָׁב

This simple form carries the movement of coming back that opens the verse.

heshiv: Brought back, restored, or answered.

הֵשִׁיב

This causative form illuminates how the delegation brings a word back to the people.

teshuvah: Return; response or answer.

תְּשׁוּבָה

This related form lets return and response echo one another, as they do in the verse’s repeated root.

Shared understanding is restored when what has been learned at a distance returns as a message to the people affected.

And the word was good in the eyes of the children of Israel, and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not speak of going up against them in battle, to ruin the land where the children of Reuben and Gad settled.
Joshua 22:33 · SDVThe returned report changes the people’s response from possible battle to blessing.
So when they were let go, they went down to Antioch, and when they had gathered the crowd together, they handed over the letter. Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the comfort.
Acts 15:30-31 · SDVA message is carried back to the gathered community, where it brings relief and rejoicing.
And they stood up that same hour, and turned back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them, Saying, The Lord has truly been raised, and was seen by Simon.
Luke 24:33-34 · SDVThose who return bring news that reshapes what the gathered people understand.
A Song of degrees. When the LORD turned again the return of Zion, we were like dreamers.
Psalm 126:1 · SDV

Joshua uses ⁨שׁוּב⁩ (shuv, return) for the delegation’s return and for bringing a word back. Psalm 126 uses the same root for Zion’s return from captivity, showing return as more than travel: what was carried away comes back.
