King James wording
King James Version
One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.THE KEY
The one who pursues is not the source of the force: the LORD is fighting, and that is what makes one reach a thousand.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks to you now: it locates the decisive action in the LORD, who fights for you. The promise rests on what has already been spoken to you, so the one-to-a-thousand reach is not an isolated human feat.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A small number can only accomplish a small thing.
THE ROOT
הַנִּלְחָם
hanilcham
GROWS FROM
לחם
lacham
to fight, wage battle
“is the one who fights for you” in this verse is hanilcham. The Hebrew names the LORD as the one fighting, not merely helping from the sidelines. The startling reach of the one pursuing is set inside a struggle whose decisive actor is the LORD.
ALSO GROWS
lacham: to fight, wage battle
לָחַם
This verb names the conflict the LORD takes up for you.
milchamah: battle, war
מִלְחָמָה
The related noun names the battle itself, making the LORD’s role active and direct.
יִרְדֹּף
yirdof
GROWS FROM
רדף
radaf
to pursue, chase
“pursue a thousand” in this verse is yirdof. The Hebrew keeps the person’s action as pursuit while assigning the fight to the LORD. The verse distinguishes visible movement from the source of the force behind it.
ALSO GROWS
radaf: to pursue, chase
רָדַף
This is the root verb behind the one person’s pursuit.
rodef: pursuer
רֹדֵף
The related form names the person pursuing, keeping the human role distinct from the LORD’s role as fighter.
דִּבֶּר
dibber
GROWS FROM
דבר
davar
to speak; word, matter
“has spoken to you” in this verse is dibber. The Hebrew phrase also says, “as he spoke to you.” The assurance is anchored in speech addressed to you, and the same root gives the word davar: a spoken word or matter.
ALSO GROWS
dibber: he spoke
דִּבֶּר
This is the verb used for what the LORD has spoken to you.
davar: word, matter
דָּבָר
The related noun holds speech and its substance together, giving the promise the concreteness of a spoken word.
THE PATTERN
The number of visible fighters does not measure the strength of a struggle when the LORD fights for you.
The LORD will fight for you, and you will hold your tongue. And he said, Hear and respond, all Judah, and you who settle in Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat. Thus says the LORD to you, Do not fear, nor be shattered from the face of this great multitude, for the war is not yours, but God's.What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?THE THREAD
How should one pursue a thousand, and two make ten thousand run, unless their rock has sold them, and the LORD has handed them over? This verse repeats the image of one pursuing a thousand, using the same Hebrew root רדף (radaf, “pursue”). Deuteronomy turns the image toward defeat, opening the Joshua verse further: the numbers alone do not determine the outcome; the LORD’s action does.
