King James wording
King James Version
And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age:THE KEY
Joshua calls Israel’s elders together, then names himself with the same Hebrew root: the one who summons the elders has grown into their elderhood.
THE MEANING
At a threshold when a life has gathered many days, you see the speaker among the elders he summons: Hebrew uses the same root for their elderhood and his growing old. The words rendered “stricken in age” also carry the image of having come into days. The verse places accumulated years within a shared community, not outside it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
That growing old puts you outside the circle of elders: the Hebrew uses the same root for Joshua’s age and their elderhood.
THE ROOT
זָקַנְתִּי
zaqanti
GROWS FROM
זקן
z-q-n
To grow old; an elder.
“old / elders” in this verse is zaqanti. Joshua’s “I am old” and “their elders” come from the same Hebrew root. The English separates a personal condition from a community role; Hebrew lets you hear one shared identity in both.
ALSO GROWS
zaqen: elder
זָקֵן
This is the word behind the elders Joshua calls; the speaker’s aging and their standing share a root.
ziqnah: old age
זִקְנָה
This related form gives the root’s sense of age as a life stage, alongside its use for elders.
וַיִּקְרָא
vayyiqra
GROWS FROM
קרא
q-r-ʾ
To call, summon, or proclaim; the same root also carries the sense of reading aloud.
“called” in this verse is vayyiqra. The call is bound to public speech: Joshua gathers the leaders so he can address them. The related word for a convocation comes from the same root, joining the act of calling with the assembly it brings together.
ALSO GROWS
qara: call, summon, proclaim, or read aloud
קָרָא
Joshua’s call gathers the people’s representatives to hear him speak.
miqra: convocation or assembly
מִקְרָא
The related noun names a gathering called together, echoing the movement from summons to assembled people.
יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
Yehoshua
GROWS FROM
ישע
y-sh-ʿ
To deliver, bringing out from narrowness into spaciousness.
“Joshua” in this verse is Yehoshua. Yehoshua carries the divine name joined to the root of deliverance. The one who gathers Israel speaks under a name that holds deliverance in its nature.
ALSO GROWS
yasha: deliver
יָשַׁע
The root beneath Joshua’s name carries the movement of deliverance.
yeshuah: deliverance
יְשׁוּעָה
This noun from the same root names the deliverance carried within Joshua’s name.
THE PATTERN
At pivotal moments, a summons gathers the community’s elders and representatives to carry its shared life together.
Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them. Then Solomon gathered the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, and the lifted ones of the fathers of the children of Israel, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the city of David, which is Zion. And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called to himself the elders of the assembly.THE THREAD
A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, speaks, and calls the earth from the rising of the sun to its going in.The Hebrew root qara, “call,” appears in both verses. Joshua’s call gathers Israel’s leaders; Psalm 50 widens that same call to the whole earth, from sunrise to sunset.
