This verse in the King James

King James wording
And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

The way is cleared by what is sent ahead of you, so your sword and bow are not the source of the opening.

What confronts you can be moved by what God sends ahead of you. Your own force is not the source of every opening; here, an unexpected agent does what sword and bow do not.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that an obstacle cannot move unless you overpower it is undone: the verse shows even kings driven out without your weapons.

שָׁלַח

shalach

GROWS FROM

שלח

To send, send forth, release, or let go.

Shalach frames the opening as something sent ahead: an agent goes before you and displaces what stands in the way. The verse names the result, then names what did not produce it, your sword or bow.

ALSO GROWS

Shilluach: Sending away or dismissal.

שִׁלּוּחַ

The same root carries the sense of release; here, what is sent ahead loosens the hold of the power blocking the way.

Shulchan: Table; provision extended outward.

שֻׁלְחָן

The table carries the image of what is extended to meet a need, while this verse shows deliverance extended ahead of you.

Shiloach: Sent forth; also the name of the pool of Siloam.

שִׁלֹחַ

The name preserves the motion of sending; in this verse, what is sent becomes the means by which the way is cleared.

A way opens through what God sends, not through the force people claim as their own.

For they did not take hold of the land by their sword, and their own arm did not deliver them; but your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you took pleasure in them.
Psalm 44:3 · SDVThe verse names victory while removing the sword and human strength as its source.
Then he answered and said to me, This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel, saying, Not by army, nor by strength, but by my breath, says the LORD of hosts.
Zechariah 4:6 · SDVThe opening comes through God’s agency rather than might or power.
But God picked out the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; and God picked out the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
1 Corinthians 1:27 · SDVWhat appears weak or unlikely becomes the means by which the mighty are overturned.
And I will send hornets before you, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite from before you.
Exodus 23:28 · SDV

The promise uses the same Hebrew root, ⁨שָׁלַח⁩ (shalach, send), for what goes ahead of the people. Joshua’s verse shows that sending fulfilled: the hornet drives out the powers before them, while their weapons remain unused.
