This verse in the King James

King James wording
So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.

What looks like dispersal is the act that carries each person into their inheritance.

A shared journey reaches its close in release: the people depart, each toward their own inheritance. The gathering gives way to individual possession, so being sent out does not erase the particular portion that belongs to each.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that being released from a group means being left with nothing: each person departs toward an inheritance.

וַיְשַׁלַּח

wayeshallaḥ

GROWS FROM

שלח

sh-l-ḥ

Send forth, release, let go.

“sent away” in this verse is wayeshallaḥ. The verb translated “let depart” carries the sense of sending people forth. The verse presents their departure as a release that opens the way toward each person’s own portion.

ALSO GROWS

shaliach: Messenger, one who is sent.

שָׁלִיחַ

The messenger carries the same root’s movement outward: being sent is part of the word’s nature.

mishloach: A sending or dispatch.

מִשְׁלוֹחַ

This noun preserves the act of sending, showing that release is an active transition rather than mere absence.

לְנַחֲלָתוֹ

le-naḥalato

GROWS FROM

נחל

n-ḥ-l

Inherit, receive or possess an allotted portion.

“holding” in this verse is le-naḥalato. The word points to a particular share, not an undifferentiated destination: each person goes to “his” inheritance. Paired with “let depart,” the verse holds release and receiving together, the people are sent out toward what is theirs to possess.

ALSO GROWS

naḥal: To inherit or take possession.

נָחַל

The verb names the receiving and possessing that gives the inheritance its lived form.

naḥalah: An inheritance or allotted portion.

נַחֲלָה

This noun names the distinct share each person moves toward in the verse.

Release is not the end of deliverance; it carries each person toward an inheritance.

And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD.
Exodus 6:8 · SDVThe promise moves from being brought out to being brought in, where the people receive their inheritance.
And he gave them the lands of nations, and they took hold of the toil of the peoples.
Psalm 105:44 · SDVThe people receive lands and inherit what was prepared there, giving release a destination in possession.
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the authority of the Adversary to God, that they may receive release from their shortcomings, and an inheritance among those who are set apart through leaning their full weight upon me.
Acts 26:18 · SDVTurning away from darkness leads to release from sins and the receiving of an inheritance.
And when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went, each man to his inheritance, to take hold of the land.
Judges 2:6 · SDV

Judges repeats the sending and inheritance language of Joshua 24:28: shalach and nachalah shape both verses. The added words “to possess the land” show the departure as a passage into active possession of what each person inherits.
