King James wording
King James Version
Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.THE KEY
Hebrew calls a tribe shevet, the same word for a rod or scepter, so the verse gathers the people by naming each distinct lineage.
THE MEANING
The whole is gathered through distinct lines: each tribe is named through one person, and the twelve are counted together. Your place in a shared life remains particular; belonging does not require becoming anonymous.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
To belong to the whole, your distinct place has to disappear.
THE ROOT
שִׁבְטֵי
shevtei
GROWS FROM
שבט
š-b-ṭ
Rod or staff; the same word also means scepter and tribe.
“tribes” in this verse is shevtei. English presents “tribe” as a social label, while Hebrew uses shevet, a word that also names a rod or royal scepter. The verse counts each lineage distinctly within the gathered people instead of flattening them into an anonymous twelve.
ALSO GROWS
shevet: Rod or staff
שֵׁבֶט
This is the concrete sense behind the word used for a tribe, giving each lineage the image of a distinct line within the people.
shevet: Scepter
שֵׁבֶט
The same word can name a sign of rule, linking the tribal line here with the scepter in Genesis 49:10.
shevet: Tribe or clan
שֵׁבֶט
This is the sense in Joshua: each distinct family line has a place in the count.
THE PATTERN
A whole people becomes visible when its distinct constituent parts are named and gathered together.
Take twelve men from among the people, one man from every tribe,For as the body is one, and has many limbs, and all the limbs of the body, though many, are one body, so also is the Anointed One.It has a great and high wall, and twelve gates, and at the gates twelve messengers, and names written upon them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel.THE THREAD
The rod shall not turn aside from Judah, nor the lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to him shall be the assembly of the peoples. The word translated “sceptre” is שֵׁבֶט (shevet), the same word rendered “tribes” in Joshua 3:12. English separates the royal staff from the family line, while Hebrew lets both meanings live in one word.
