King James wording
King James Version
And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.THE KEY
The command’s surprise is that the stand is taken inside the descending river, not safely at its edge.
THE MEANING
You carry what is held in covenant toward a boundary. The commanded stand is inside the Jordan itself, in the river that descends, so the threshold is met from within its moving waters. The crossing begins with a fixed presence in the place that seems to deny passage.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that stillness means retreating to safety dissolves here: the commanded stand is within the current.
THE ROOT
וְנַעֲמַדְתֶּם
ve-na'amadtem
GROWS FROM
עמד
To stand, remain, or take one’s position.
“stand” in this verse is ve-na'amadtem. The root gives the command the sense of taking a position, and that position is inside the Jordan. In Joshua 3:16, the same root describes the waters themselves standing, joining the priests’ stance to the river’s halt.
ALSO GROWS
ma'amad: A standing place, station, or position.
מַעֲמָד
This branch makes the root’s sense of a fixed position vivid: the priests’ place is in the river.
vayya'amdu: “And they stood,” from the same root.
וַיַּעַמְדוּ
Joshua 3:16 uses this form for the waters that stood, linguistically linking the priests’ stand with the river’s stoppage.
יַרְדֵּן
Yarden
GROWS FROM
ירד
To descend or go down.
“Jordan” in this verse is Yarden. The river’s name carries the root of descent. The priests take their stand in the very flow whose name bears the sense of going down.
ALSO GROWS
yarad: To descend or go down.
יָרַד
This verbal root gives the river name its downward movement.
morad: A descent or slope.
מוֹרָד
This branch turns descent into a place in the landscape, echoing the Jordan as a downward course.
THE PATTERN
At the water threshold, what seems to block passage becomes the place where movement and revelation break open.
And the children of Israel came into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them, on their right hand and on their left. The sea saw and fled; the Jordan turns backward. And Jesus, when he had been immersed, came up straight out of the water; and look, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the breath of God coming down like a dove and coming upon him.THE THREAD
And the waters which came down from above stood and rose as a single heap, very far from the city Adam, beside Zaretan. And those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, were used up and cut off. And the people crossed over facing Jericho. The root for “stand” appears first in the command to the priests and then in the description of the waters. The priests take their stand in the descending river, and the river itself takes a stand as the people pass through.
