King James wording
King James Version
And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.THE KEY
They take the provisions in their hands but never ask the mouth that could reveal what those provisions conceal.
THE MEANING
You can examine the evidence in front of you and still leave the decisive voice unconsulted. The verse sets provisions beside the LORD’s mouth: what is visible has been handled, but direction has not been sought.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Convincing evidence makes asking for guidance unnecessary.
THE ROOT
שָׁאָלוּ
sha'alu
GROWS FROM
שאל
sha'al
Ask, request, inquire.
“did not ask” in this verse is sha'alu. The root makes the omission specific: the men do not request direction from the LORD. English can make this sound like a missed consultation, while the Hebrew verb points to an unmade request for an answer.
ALSO GROWS
she'elah: Question; request.
שְׁאֵלָה
A question is a request for an answer, so the verse’s silence is not just a missing fact but a direction they never ask to receive.
Sha'ul: Asked for; requested; the name Saul.
שָׁאוּל
The same root can name someone as what has been requested; here, the men leave that act of asking undone.
THE PATTERN
Visible evidence does not replace seeking God’s direction.
I make you wise, and I teach you in the way you walk. I guide you with my eye upon you.Lean your full weight upon the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, perceive him, and he straightens your paths. But if any of you is left behind in wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all without doubling and without taunting, and it will be given him.THE THREAD
Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them? The verb translated “asked” comes from שאל (sha’al, ask or request), the root left unused in Joshua 9:14. Here, Israel’s question is spoken before the next move, making explicit the step omitted there.
