King James wording
King James Version
And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.THE KEY
An open heart is not automatically held in good faith; here it becomes the information that makes betrayal profitable.
THE MEANING
Your heart can be received as intimacy and used as actionable knowledge in the same moment. Delilah recognizes that Samson has disclosed his entire inner self, then summons the rulers for payment; the verse lets closeness and betrayal stand side by side.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that total honesty itself guarantees safety: disclosure reveals the speaker, but it does not make the receiver trustworthy.
THE ROOT
לִבּוֹ
libbô
GROWS FROM
לבב
l-b-b
The heart as the inner person and center of thought, will, and feeling.
The phrase is “all his heart”: the whole inward self is disclosed, not just one passing emotion. The verse shows that such intimacy can become consequential knowledge in another person’s hands.
ALSO GROWS
lev: Heart; inner center.
לֵב
This shorter form keeps the focus on the inward center Samson opens to Delilah.
levav: Heart; inner self.
לֵבָב
This fuller form underlies libbo, emphasizing that what is disclosed is his whole inner self.
וַיַּגֶּד
vayyagged
GROWS FROM
נגד
n-g-d
To bring forward, make known, or declare.
“laid open all his heart” in this verse is vayyagged. The verb presents telling as bringing something into view. What was inward becomes available to someone else, and in this verse that disclosure gives the rulers knowledge they can act on.
ALSO GROWS
higgid: To tell or declare.
הִגִּיד
This related form shows the act of making something known that was not previously in the open.
nagid: A leader or ruler; one who is out in front.
נָגִיד
The shared root links what is brought forward with those positioned to act on it; here, the Philistine rulers arrive once Samson’s secret is made known.
THE PATTERN
When intimate knowledge is given to someone pursuing personal gain, what was shared can become leverage.
For it was not an enemy who reproached me, then I could have carried it. Nor was it the one who hated me who swelled himself against me, then I would have hidden myself from him. But you are a man set in line beside me, my familiar one, and the one I know. We sweetened the intimate circle together, and walked to the house of God in the throng. And in this manner Absalom did to all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel. Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests. And said to them, What will you give me, and I will hand him over to you? And they set out for him thirty pieces of silver. And from that time he sought an opportunity to hand him over.THE THREAD
Above every watch you keep, guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life. Both passages turn on lev/levav, “heart,” as the inner center from which life proceeds. Proverbs reveals why Samson’s “all his heart” carries such weight: it is not a passing feeling but the center of a life.
