This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

The assembly is named as God’s people and counted at the same time as a force of four hundred thousand foot soldiers drawing swords.

You see the leaders of every tribe take their stand in one assembly, with four hundred thousand foot soldiers drawing swords. The people are named as God’s, and their armed force remains visible in the same scene; neither fact cancels the other.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the assumption that a gathering under God’s name must be harmless or morally simple. Here the assembly is called God’s people and counted as a sword-bearing force.

וַיִּתְיַצְּבוּ

vayyityatstsevu

GROWS FROM

יצב

y-ts-b

To stand, take one’s position, or station oneself.

“took their stand” in this verse is vayyityatstsevu. The verb translated presented themselves describes taking a stand, not simply arriving. The leaders are positioned within the assembly, and the verse immediately identifies the force gathered there.

ALSO GROWS

nitzav: Standing or stationed

נִצָּב

This related form keeps the physical sense of taking a position present in the leaders’ action.

matzevah: A standing pillar or marker

מַצֵּבָה

The same word family carries the image of something set upright and placed in position.

קָהָל

qahal

GROWS FROM

קהל

q-h-l

To assemble or gather into a congregation.

“assembly” in this verse is qahal. The root names both the gathered body and the act of assembling it. The verse makes that gathered body concrete by naming its tribal leaders and counting its sword-bearing foot soldiers.

ALSO GROWS

qahal: An assembly or congregation

קָהָל

This is the gathered body in the verse, described as the people of God.

haqhel: Assemble or gather

הַקְהֵל

This verb form shows the same root naming the act that brings a people into an assembly.

שֹׁלֵף

sholef

GROWS FROM

שלף

sh-l-f

To draw out, pull away, or pluck off.

“drew” in this verse is sholef. The Hebrew participle presents the foot soldiers as drawing swords. This is a physical act of pulling something from its place, and the same root can describe drawing a weapon or taking off a sandal.

ALSO GROWS

vayyishlof: He drew out a dagger

וַיִּשְׁלֹף

Judges 3:22 uses the same root for a weapon being pulled from its place.

veshalaf: And he took off or plucked off a sandal

וְשָׁלַף

Ruth 4:7 uses the root for removing a sandal, showing its concrete sense of drawing something away.

Gathering concentrates shared intent into collective force, including armed force.

Judges 20:1 · SDV

The Hebrew word translated gathered in the prior verse comes from ⁨קהל⁩ (qahal), the same root behind assembly here. Judges 20:1 says they gather as one man; this verse shows that unity taking shape as tribal leaders and a vast sword-bearing force.
