King James wording
King James Version
And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.THE KEY
The verse calls the return orderly even though the order it closes has been rebuilt through the seizure of women.
THE MEANING
Each man returns to a defined place among tribe, family, and inherited land. That ordered return follows the seizure of women to supply wives for Benjamin, so the language of settled belonging carries the violence of how it is restored.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A settled return does not make the means of restoring order harmless; the preceding seizure of women remains part of what this ending records.
THE ROOT
נַחֲלָה
naḥalah
GROWS FROM
נחל
n-ḥ-l
To inherit or possess, and to assign something as an inheritance.
The root carries both receiving an inheritance and assigning someone a share, so an inheritance is both a possession and a place within a distribution. Here, tribe and family lead to each man’s allotted place: the repeated “every man” makes the collective return personal, one share at a time.
ALSO GROWS
nāḥal: To inherit or take possession
נָחַל
The verb shows inheritance as receiving and holding a portion, which gives weight to each man’s return to his own share.
naḥalah: Inheritance, inherited possession, allotted share
נַחֲלָה
This noun names the particular portion each man returns to in the verse.
hinḥil: To cause someone to inherit; to assign as an inheritance
הִנְחִיל
This form makes explicit the assigning side of the root: a share belongs to someone because it has been allotted to them.
THE PATTERN
A person’s place among a people is expressed as a share received within a larger inheritance.
"Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names. The cords fall to me in sweet places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful. And now, brothers, I set you alongside God and the word of his favor, which is able to build you as a house, and to give you a portion among all who have been set apart.THE THREAD
The cords fall to me in sweet places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful.Psalm 16:6 uses the same word, נַחֲלָה (naḥalah, inheritance), for the speaker’s heritage. Judges names each man’s return to his allotted share; Psalm lets you see that share through its boundary lines.
