This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

The land’s “rest” is quiet, not immortality: the verse places its forty years of settledness beside Othniel’s death.

A season of quiet is real even while life remains mortal. Peace names a settled condition; it does not make anything permanent.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that peace guarantees an unbroken life: the land is at rest, and Othniel dies.

וַתִּשְׁקֹט

vattishqot

GROWS FROM

שקט

sh-q-t

To be quiet, still, or undisturbed.

“lay still” in this verse is vattishqot. The Hebrew describes the land becoming quiet, a settled condition rather than a promise that nothing can end. The same root can name quietness itself, so the word holds peace and life’s limits together without confusing them.

ALSO GROWS

vattishqot: And it became quiet; the same verb form describes the land’s rest in Judges 3:30.

וַתִּשְׁקֹט

The repeated wording shows that rest is the land settling into quiet, not a different or more absolute state.

sheqet: Quietness, as in Isaiah 32:17.

שֶׁקֶט

The verb’s branch names quiet as a condition, illuminating how the land can be settled while a human life still ends.

Rest is a condition in which disturbance falls quiet while life continues within it.

So Joshua seized the whole land, according to every word the LORD had spoken to Moses, and Joshua gave it to Israel as a possession, according to their portions by their tribes. And the land lay still from war.
Joshua 11:23 · SDVThe same root, ⁨שקט⁩ (shaqat, “be quiet”), describes the land’s rest as war ceases.
Therefore a Sabbath settling remains for the people of God.
Hebrews 4:9 · SDVThough it uses a different word, this verse presents rest as a continuing reality for God’s people, not a condition dependent on one leader’s lifespan.
The whole earth rests and is still, and they burst into song.
Isaiah 14:7 · SDV

Isaiah uses the same root ⁨שקט⁩ (shaqat, “be quiet”) for the earth’s stillness, then says its people break into song. Quiet is not vacancy: life still sounds within it, clarifying the difference between the land’s settledness and Othniel’s finite life.
